Career

Selena Gomez first became interested in pursuing a career in entertainment by watching her mother prepare for stage productions. In 2002, she began her acting career on the children’s television series Barney & Friends, playing the character Gianna. Reflecting on the experience, Gomez mentioned that she was very shy and learned a lot about acting from the show. She appeared in thirteen episodes between 2002 and 2004 before being released because she was too old for the series. During her time on Barney & Friends, Gomez had small roles in the film Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and the TV movie Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (2005). She also guest-starred in a 2006 episode of the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.

In 2007, Gomez gained a recurring role on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana as pop star Mikayla. Around this time, she filmed pilot episodes for two potential Disney Channel series: a Suite Life spin-off titled Arwin! and a Lizzie McGuire spin-off titled What’s Stevie Thinking?. Eventually, she auditioned for and won the lead role of Alex Russo in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. Gomez and her mother moved to Los Angeles for her to take on this role. The show, about a teenage girl in a family of wizards who own a restaurant in New York City, quickly became successful and marked Gomez’s breakthrough into the mainstream, earning her “teen idol” status. The series won numerous awards, including the Outstanding Children’s Program at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards. Gomez was praised for her comic timing and sarcastic delivery.

While working on the second season of Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez voiced a character in the animated film Horton Hears a Who! (2008), which was a commercial and critical success. In the same year, she starred in the direct-to-video film Another Cinderella Story, playing an aspiring dancer named Mary Santiago. She recorded three songs for the soundtrack, including “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know,” which became her first entry on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. This role earned her a Young Artist Award. Gomez also recorded “Fly to Your Heart” for the soundtrack of the animated film Tinker Bell (2008).

At age 16, Gomez signed with Hollywood Records and formed her own production company, July Moon Productions, allowing her to develop film projects. She appeared as Alex Russo in a crossover episode of the Disney Channel series The Suite Life on Deck in 2009 and guest-starred on Sonny with a Chance. She and Demi Lovato starred in the Disney Channel film Princess Protection Program, which premiered to 8.5 million viewers. Gomez also starred in Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, which was a major success and won the series its second consecutive Emmy.

Hoping to venture into music, Gomez formed the pop rock band Selena Gomez & the Scene. Their debut album Kiss & Tell was released in September 2009 and received mixed reviews. Despite this, the single “Naturally” became a breakthrough hit. Gomez starred in the film Ramona and Beezus (2010), which was well received by critics. The band’s second album A Year Without Rain was released in 2010, with its singles achieving moderate success.

Selena Gomez & the Scene released their third and final album When the Sun Goes Down in June 2011. The album featured hits like “Who Says” and “Love You like a Love Song,” the latter becoming one of Gomez’s most successful songs. Gomez starred in the film Monte Carlo (2011) and made a cameo appearance in The Muppets. She also hosted the MuchMusic Video Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2011.

In January 2012, Gomez announced a break from music and placed her band on hiatus. Wizards of Waverly Place ended its run on the Disney Channel after four seasons. Gomez then starred in the controversial film Spring Breakers (2012), which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. The film received positive reviews and was seen as a departure from her Disney image.

Gomez voiced Mavis Dracula in the animated film Hotel Transylvania (2012), which was commercially successful. In 2013, she starred alongside Ethan Hawke in the film Getaway, which was a critical and commercial failure. She also released her debut solo album Stars Dance in July 2013, which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. Gomez incorporated dance routines into her performances, inspired by artists like Janet Jackson and Britney Spears. The music video for “Come & Get It” won Best Pop Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.

Gomez embarked on her first solo world tour, the Stars Dance Tour, in 2013. However, she canceled the Australian and Asian legs of the tour in December to take a hiatus. In January 2014, Gomez spent two weeks in a treatment center to address issues related to lupus. She confirmed her lupus diagnosis in 2015 and revealed that she had undergone chemotherapy.

Gomez starred in Behaving Badly (2014), which received negative reviews, although her performance was praised. She also appeared in the drama Rudderless (2014). Gomez fired her mother and stepfather as her managers in April 2014 and signed with new talent agencies. In November 2014, she released the single “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” which became a hit. She released her greatest hits album For You in the same month and parted ways with Hollywood Records, signing with Interscope Records in December 2014.

Gomez collaborated with Norwegian DJ Kygo on the single “It Ain’t Me,” released in February 2017. The song was a global success, reaching the top ten on major music charts worldwide, including the U.S. and the U.K., and the top five in countries such as Australia, Canada, and Germany. It was nominated for Top Dance/Electronic Song at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and became Gomez’s best-selling song in the U.K., with over 1.4 million chart units.

In March 2017, Gomez served as executive producer for the Netflix series adaptation of the novel Thirteen Reasons Why. The show faced backlash from mental health charities and suicide prevention communities for allegedly glamorizing suicide. Despite the controversy, the first season was critically acclaimed, although subsequent seasons received negative reviews. The show became the most tweeted-about show of 2017 and the most-watched original streaming series of 2018. It ended after four seasons in June 2020. Gomez recorded a cover of “Only You” for the first season’s soundtrack.

Gomez released the single “Bad Liar” in May 2017, which premiered exclusively on Spotify. The song received universal acclaim, with Billboard naming it the best song of 2017. In October, she released “Wolves,” a collaboration with EDM producer Marshmello, which also achieved commercial success. Gomez was named Billboard‘s Woman of the Year in 2017.

In May 2018, Gomez released the single “Back to You” for the 13 Reasons Why Season 2 Soundtrack, which reached the top ten in various countries. She voiced Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, released in July, which grossed $528 million worldwide. Gomez featured on DJ Snake’s single “Taki Taki” with Ozuna and Cardi B, released in September. The song reached the top ten in multiple countries and topped the charts in Spain and several Latin American countries. In November 2018, Gomez became Spotify’s most-streamed artist with 46 million monthly listeners. She also featured on Julia Michaels’s single “Anxiety” and the collaboration “I Can’t Get Enough” with Benny Blanco, Tainy, and J Balvin, released in early 2019.

Gomez appeared in the comedy horror film The Dead Don’t Die (2019), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York. Despite mixed reviews, her performance was praised. She donated over $1 million to the Time’s Up initiative due to the resurfaced sexual abuse allegations against Allen. Gomez also executive produced the Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented, which premiered in October 2019 and received critical acclaim.

Gomez released “Lose You to Love Me” as the lead single from her third studio album in October 2019, which became her first number-one song in the U.S. and Canada. Her album Rare, released in January 2020, debuted at number one in the U.S. and received positive reviews.
