Career
In 2007, Scooter Braun, a former marketing executive at So So Def Recordings, stumbled upon one of Justin Bieber’s 2007 YouTube videos by accident while searching for videos of another singer. Impressed, Braun tracked down Bieber’s theater performance and eventually contacted Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette. Initially hesitant due to Braun’s Judaism, Mallette was persuaded by church elders to let Bieber go with Braun. At the age of 13, Bieber traveled to Atlanta with Braun to record demo tapes and was soon singing for Usher.
Bieber was signed to Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG), a joint venture between Braun and Usher. While Justin Timberlake was also interested in signing Bieber, Usher won the bidding war partly because having two associated Justins might confuse the market. With the help of then-manager Chris Hicks, Usher secured a label home for Bieber with L.A. Reid of The Island Def Jam Music Group. Bieber then moved to Atlanta with his mother to continue working with Braun and Usher. Braun officially became Bieber’s manager in 2008.
In 2009, Bieber released his debut single “One Time,” which quickly gained success on the Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This led to the release of his extended play album “My World” later that year. Bieber’s second single, “One Less Lonely Girl,” and two promotional singles, “Love Me” and “Favorite Girl,” were also well-received.
Bieber’s popularity continued to soar, and he became the first solo artist to have four singles chart in the top 40 of the Hot 100 before the release of a debut album. His debut album, “My World 2.0,” was released in 2010, featuring hits like “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, making Bieber the youngest solo male act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder.
In 2011, Bieber starred in the 3D concert film “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” which was a box office success, grossing over $99 million worldwide. He also released his second studio album, “Under the Mistletoe,” which became the first Christmas album by a male artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200.
Bieber’s third studio album, “Believe,” was released in 2012, showcasing a more mature sound. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, solidifying Bieber’s status as a pop sensation. He embarked on the Believe Tour to promote the album, further cementing his popularity.
In the following years, Bieber continued to release new music, including the compilation album “Journals” in 2013, which featured tracks from his Music Mondays series. He also made appearances on television shows and movies, expanding his presence beyond the music industry.
In February 2015, Justin Bieber collaborated with Jack Ü on the song “Where Are Ü Now,” which became a hit, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The following month, he appeared in Carly Rae Jepsen’s music video for “I Really Like You.” Bieber was then roasted on Comedy Central and appeared on Lip Sync Battle.
Later that year, Bieber released “What Do You Mean?” as the lead single from his album “Purpose.” It debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, setting records for fastest song to reach number one on US iTunes. The album itself debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart in November 2015.
In 2016, Bieber made UK chart history by occupying the top three positions on the UK Singles Chart with “Love Yourself,” “Sorry,” and “What Do You Mean?” He embarked on the Purpose World Tour, which became one of the highest-grossing tours of 2016 and 2017.
In 2017, Bieber featured on the remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” which became a global success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He also collaborated with DJ Khaled, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne on the song “I’m the One,” which also debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
The following years saw Bieber continuing his successful collaborations with artists like Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Dan + Shay. In 2020, he released his fifth studio album “Changes,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Bieber’s collaboration with Ariana Grande on “Stuck with U” in 2020 raised funds for COVID-19 relief efforts. He continued to release new music, including singles like “Holy” and “Lonely.”
In 2021, Bieber released his sixth studio album “Justice,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. He also collaborated with artists like Kid Laroi and Wizkid, expanding his musical reach into new genres. Bieber’s success continued into 2022 with hits like “Ghost” and “Honest.” He surprised fans with a performance at Coachella and released an exclusive single for the game Garena Free Fire.
In January 2023, Bieber sold his music publishing rights and recording catalogue shares. He declined an offer to headline Coachella 2023 to focus on his upcoming seventh studio album.
