Career
Roopa Ganguly began her acting journey by appearing in several Bengali TV serials. Her breakthrough came in 1986 when she starred in the TV series “Muktabandha.” The following year marked her debut in films with Prabhat Roy’s Bengali movie “Prateek.” Simultaneously, she gained immense popularity for her role as ‘Draupadi’ in B. R. Chopra’s iconic TV series “Mahabharat.”
In addition to “Mahabharat,” Ganguly showcased her talent in various TV serials including “Karam Apna Apna,” “Love Story,” “Vakt Batyega Kaun Apna Kaun Paraya,” “Kasturi,” and “Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo.”
In 2015, Roopa Ganguly ventured into politics, aligning herself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, her electoral debut in the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections saw her losing to Trinamool Congress candidate, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, in the Howrah North constituency. Despite the setback, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha later that year, filling the vacancy left by cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu who resigned from the party.
