Career

Rajkummar Rao’s career began after his graduation from FTII in 2008. He spent the following year exploring opportunities, eventually landing a small, uncredited role as a news reader in Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rann” (2010). However, his breakthrough came when he auditioned for Dibakar Banerjee’s “Love Sex Aur Dhokha” (2010) after seeing an advertisement. Rao’s portrayal in the film earned him critical acclaim and marked a successful start to his career.

Following the success of his debut, Rao received an offer from producer Ekta Kapoor to star in “Ragini MMS” (2011), a found footage horror film. Despite initial hesitation due to potential typecasting, he accepted the role and garnered commercial success with the film. He continued his momentum with Bejoy Nambiar’s “Shaitan” (2011), where he impressed critics with his portrayal of a slimy police officer.

In 2012, Anurag Kashyap cast Rao in “Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2” and Bedabrata Pain’s “Chittagong,” showcasing his versatility as an actor. He further showcased his talent in Reema Kagti’s “Talaash: The Answer Lies Within,” sharing the screen with Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji.

The following year marked a significant turning point in Rao’s career with the release of “Kai Po Che!” (2013), where he received critical acclaim for his performance and earned his first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in “Shahid,” a biographical drama, portraying the titular role of lawyer Shahid Azmi. Rao’s dedication to the character earned him widespread praise, along with several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actor.

In 2013, Rao also played a supporting role in the acclaimed film “Queen,” followed by a collaboration with Hansal Mehta in “CityLights” (2014). His performance in both films garnered critical acclaim, further establishing him as a versatile actor.

In 2015, Rao showcased his range by appearing in diverse roles, including a supporting role in “Dolly Ki Doli,” a romantic drama in “Hamari Adhuri Kahani,” and a journalist in “Aligarh.” His performances were praised by critics, with “Aligarh” earning him his second Filmfare nomination.

The actor continued to impress audiences with his portrayal in “Trapped” (2016), where he played a man trapped in an apartment, showcasing his ability to carry a film largely on his own. Rao’s performance in the survival drama earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics).

In the subsequent years, Rao delivered notable performances in films like “Newton” (2017), “Bareilly Ki Barfi” (2017), and “Stree” (2018), receiving critical acclaim and commercial success.

In 2019, Rao starred in “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga,” “Judgementall Hai Kya,” and “Made in China,” showcasing his versatility across genres. His performances were praised by critics, further solidifying his position as one of the most talented actors in Bollywood.

In 2021, Rao made his Hollywood debut with “The White Tiger” and starred in “Roohi,” “Badhaai Do,” and “Hum Do Hamare Do,” continuing to captivate audiences with his diverse roles and exceptional acting prowess.
