Rajesh Khanna emerged from the All India Talent Contest in 1965 as one of the eight finalists out of over 10,000 participants. This contest, organized by United Producers and Filmfare, led to his film debut in 1966 with “Aakhri Khat,” followed by “Raaz” in 1967. These were part of his prize for winning the competition.
His breakthrough came with the 1969 film “Aradhana,” making him an instant sensation. Following this success, he delivered a series of hits in the early 1970s, including “Do Raaste,” “Anand,” and “Amar Prem,” setting a record of 17 consecutive hits in three years.
In 1972, his streak of hits paused briefly with a string of flops, but he bounced back with successes like “Bawarchi” and “Anuraag.” The declaration of emergency in 1975 and the rise of Amitabh Bachchan saw a shift in the industry dynamics. Khanna’s career faced challenges as he struggled with film choices, resulting in a decline in his stardom.
Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Khanna’s career fluctuated with a mix of successes and failures. Notable films during this period include “Thodisi Bewafaii” and “Kudrat.” His career saw a resurgence in 1983 with back-to-back hits like “Avtaar,” “Souten,” and “Agar Tum Na Hote.” This streak continued with successes like “Maqsad” and “Dharm Aur Qanoon” in 1984.
The mid to late 1980s saw Khanna’s career facing ups and downs with films like “Amrit” and “Nasihat” being well-received while others like “Awam” and “Vijay” failing at the box office. In the 1990s, Khanna’s film appearances decreased as he ventured into politics. However, he continued to act sporadically in films like “Swarg” in 1990 and “Aa Ab Laut Chalen” in 1999.
