Career
Thackeray began his political journey by establishing the student wing of Shiv Sena, known as Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena. His prominence grew during the campaign for the 1990 Maharashtra assembly elections.
In the 1990s, Thackeray believed himself to be the natural successor to his uncle, Balasaheb. However, Balasaheb favored his own son, Uddhav, over Raj, which led to Raj feeling sidelined within the party.
Feeling marginalized by the leadership of Shiv Sena, Raj Thackeray resigned from the party on November 27, 2005. He announced his intention to form a new political party, which later became known as Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
Controversy
In February 2008, Raj Thackeray initiated a movement against migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai. He warned that if their dominance continued, he would compel them to leave. This led to his arrest, but he was released after paying a penalty.
Later that year, Thackeray’s party, along with Shiv Sena, protested the attacks on Indian students in Australia by banning Australian cricketers from playing in Mumbai during IPL 3. In July 2008, Thackeray demanded that shops in Mumbai display Marathi signboards alongside English ones. Non-compliance resulted in threats from his party, leading to some shop owners being attacked and signboards blackened.
During the music launch of the film “Drona,” actor and MP Jaya Bachchan’s statement sparked controversy. Thackeray threatened to ban Bachchan films unless she apologized publicly for allegedly hurting Maharashtrians. The issue was resolved after Amitabh Bachchan apologized.
In October 2008, Jet Airways laid off workers, including Marathis and North Indians. Thackeray intervened, threatening to halt all Jet Airways flights in Maharashtra until the layoffs were reversed. The airline reinstated the workers within hours.
In October 2009, MNS workers disrupted screenings of the film “Wake Up Sid” due to references to “Bombay” instead of “Mumbai.” The film’s producer, Karan Johar, apologized and agreed to Raj’s terms. In 2010, telecom companies in Maharashtra began offering customer service in Marathi after Thackeray demanded it.
In December 2011, Thackeray advised Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti to reconsider their stance on merging Belgaum with Maharashtra, emphasizing the need for a practical approach. He urged the MES to identify whether Marathis in Belgaum were targeted for supporting Marathi language or the merger.
