Career
Harry passed the Regular Commissions Board in September 2004 and entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on 8 May 2005. Known as Officer Cadet Wales, he joined Alamein Company. His entry was delayed by four months due to an injury to his left knee. By April 2006, Harry completed his officer training and was commissioned as a Cornet (second lieutenant) in the Blues and Royals, a regiment of the Household Cavalry in the British Army. He was promoted to lieutenant on 13 April 2008, after reaching two years’ seniority.
In 2006, it was announced that Harry’s unit was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq the following year. This sparked a public debate about whether he should serve there. The Ministry of Defence stated in April 2006 that Harry would be shielded from the front line if his unit was sent to war, as his presence could attract additional attention and put him and those he commanded at risk. Harry agreed, saying he wouldn’t have gone through Sandhurst if he couldn’t serve on the front line. He completed the Troop Leaders’ Course in October 2006 and rejoined his regiment in Windsor, where he was put in charge of a troop of 11 soldiers and four Scimitar reconnaissance vehicles.
In February 2007, the Ministry of Defence and Clarence House announced that Harry would be deployed with his regiment to Iraq. This decision was supported by Harry, who said he would leave the army if he was told to remain in safety while his regiment went to war. General Sir Richard Dannatt, the head of the British army, decided in April 2007 that Harry would serve with his unit in Iraq as a troop commander. However, by 16 May, Dannatt announced that Harry would not serve in Iraq due to concerns about him being a high-value target and the dangers this posed to the soldiers around him. Harry was disappointed but accepted the decision.
In the summer of 2007, Harry was trained as a joint terminal attack controller at RAF Leeming. By early June 2007, he trained alongside Canadian and British soldiers in Canada, preparing for a possible tour of duty in Afghanistan. This was confirmed in February the following year when it was revealed that Harry had been secretly deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, for the previous ten weeks. The media coverage that followed led to his immediate withdrawal due to security concerns. During his time in Afghanistan, Harry helped repel a Taliban attack and performed patrol duty in hostile areas. He was awarded an Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan in May 2008.
In October 2008, it was announced that Harry would learn to fly military helicopters. He attended the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, joining his brother. Initially failing his pilot’s theory test in February 2009, he was later presented with his flying brevet by Prince Charles on 7 May 2010. Harry received his Apache Flying Badge on 14 April 2011 and was promoted to captain two days later. By June 2011, it was announced that Harry would be available for deployment to Afghanistan as an Apache helicopter pilot. He completed his helicopter gunship training in the United States and returned to England in November 2011 to finish his training.
On 7 September 2012, Harry arrived in southern Afghanistan as part of a four-month combat tour as a co-pilot and gunner for an Apache helicopter. Within days, the Taliban threatened his life, and following an attack on Camp Bastion, he was moved to a safe location. Harry returned from his deployment in January 2013 and later qualified as an Apache aircraft commander. In his memoir, “Spare,” Harry revealed he flew on six missions that resulted in killing 25 Taliban members. His revelations led to backlash from various quarters.
On 17 January 2014, it was announced that Harry had completed his attachment to the 3 Regiment Army Air Corps and would take up a staff officer role in HQ London District. His responsibilities included coordinating significant projects and commemorative events involving the Army in London.
In March 2014, Harry launched the Invictus Games, a sporting event for injured servicemen and women, which took place in September 2014. He was actively involved in promoting and organizing the Games, attending numerous related events.
In January 2015, it was reported that Harry would support wounded service personnel through the MOD’s Defence Recovery Capability scheme. He visited several recovery centers and met with service members to ensure they had adequate recovery plans.
On 17 March 2015, it was announced that Harry would leave the Armed Forces in June. Before then, he spent four weeks with the Australian Defence Force, participating in various training exercises. Harry’s attachment with the ADF ended on 8 May 2015, and he resigned his short service commission on 19 June 2015.
In 2021, Harry described his ten years in the army as the happiest times of his life. Since leaving the army, he has remained closely involved with the armed forces through the Invictus Games and other engagements. On 19 December 2017, he succeeded his grandfather as Captain General Royal Marines. In May 2018, he was promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Navy, Major of the British Army, and Squadron Leader of the Royal Air Force.
On 18 January 2020, Buckingham Palace announced that Harry would step back from royal duties, including his official military appointments. In February 2021, it was confirmed that he would relinquish his honorary military roles.
