Career

In 2006, Desai began her acting career by landing the lead role in Ekta Kapoor’s television drama “Kasamh Se.” Portraying the character of Bani opposite Ram Kapoor, she received several awards for her performance, including the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress.

The following year, she participated in the Indian version of BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing,” called “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.” Despite being eliminated initially, she re-entered the contest via wildcard entry and ultimately won, earning the title of Dancing Star.

Desai transitioned to the film industry in 2008, making her debut in “Rock On!!” directed by Abhishek Kapoor. Her portrayal as the wife of Farhan Akhtar garnered critical acclaim, earning her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. In 2009, she appeared in “Life Partner” alongside Tusshar Kapoor, Genelia D’Souza, and others.

The year 2010 marked her role in “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai,” where she starred alongside Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi. The film received praise, earning her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress and winning the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She also shot for Vikram Tuli’s film “Main Jokerr” in 2010, which unfortunately never saw a release due to title issues. In 2012, she had a cameo appearance in “Teri Meri Kahaani” before landing a lead role in “Bol Bachchan,” which proved to be a significant box office success. Desai continued to work in various films, including “I, Me Aur Main” (2013), “Policegiri” (2013), and an item number in “Ek Villain” (2014).

In 2016, she portrayed Naureen, the wife of Mohammad Azharuddin, in the biopic “Azhar” and reprised her role as the wife of Farhan Akhtar in “Rock On 2.” After a hiatus, Desai returned to the silver screen in 2021 with the Zee 5 film “Silence…Can You Hear It?” and appeared in the music video “Rihaee.”

In 2022, she starred in the Hindi film “Forensic” and was announced to make her Telugu debut in the supernatural web series “Dhootha.” Additionally, she committed to star in the dark fantasy movie “Kosha.”
