Career

Nitin Gadkari’s journey in politics began in his youth when he joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976. He actively participated in student elections at Nagpur University, leading ABVP to win all seats in 1976. Gadkari’s involvement in ABVP culminated in him becoming the President of Nagpur Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) at the 28th National Convention of ABVP in 1981.

In 1990, Gadkari was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Graduates’ Constituency, a position he held for four consecutive terms until 2008. During this time, he also served as the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister in the Maharashtra government and became the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1996.

Gadkari’s leadership skills were recognized when he was appointed as the President of the Maharashtra BJP in 2004. Later, in December 2009, he was appointed as the National President of the BJP, a position he held until January 2013. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Gadkari contested and won from the Nagpur Constituency, leading to his induction as the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways in the Narendra Modi government.

Following the unfortunate demise of Union Minister Gopinath Munde, Gadkari was entrusted with additional responsibilities, including the Ministry of Shipping and Water Resources, and River Development and the Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry in September 2017. He continued to serve the people of Nagpur by contesting and winning the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, defeating his opponent Congress’ Nana Patole with a significant margin.

On 31 May 2019, Nitin Gadkari was sworn in as the Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways, & Shipping and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, marking another chapter in his illustrious political career.

Controversy

In November 2011, a tragic incident unfolded when the body of a young girl was discovered inside Nitin Gadkari’s car. Investigations revealed that she was the daughter of his house cleaner. Allegations arose from the girl’s family, claiming she was assaulted and murdered due to the 19 injury marks found on her body. However, medical reports indicated that she died due to suffocation and the marks were not signs of assault. Despite accusations of using his influence to sway investigations, no action was taken against Gadkari.

In 2012, Gadkari faced accusations of money laundering and forgery by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The investigations revealed questionable transactions involving his company, Purti Group, which had provided loans to various companies that later invested in Gadkari’s ventures, hinting at possible money laundering activities.

In 2014, amidst controversies, Gadkari announced the end of the ban on e-rickshaws as a mode of public transport. However, this decision raised eyebrows as it was noted that Gadkari’s company, Purti Group, had interests in e-rickshaw manufacturing. Despite initial concerns, Gadkari clarified that none of his companies were directly involved in the manufacturing of e-rickshaws.

The same year, prior to the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Gadkari faced scrutiny from the Election Commission. He received a show cause notice for remarks made during a rally, where he seemingly suggested voters accept bribes from other parties but vote according to their own preference. This incident further added to the controversies surrounding Gadkari’s political career.
