In 1999, Monali Thakur began her singing career with the Bengali children’s song “Choi Choi Choi Tipi Tipi” for the film “Chena Chena.” She gained recognition at the age of 14 by winning the Best Playback Singer Award at the Anandalok Awards for her song in the Bengali serial “Shri Ramkrishna.”
Thakur rose to prominence after placing ninth in Indian Idol 2. However, she struggled to establish herself in the music industry even after her stint on the show. In 2008, music director Pritam Chakraborty offered her two songs for the Bollywood film “Race” – “Khwab Dekhe” and “Zara Zara Touch Me.”
Her first major breakthrough came with the songs “Zara Zara Touch Me” and “Khwab Dekhe (Sexy Lady)” from “Race.” She collaborated with Pritam again for the song “Meow” in “Golmaal Returns” and performed the title track of “Ekhane Aakash Neel,” an official Bengali remake of the Hindi series “Sanjivani.”
In 2010, Thakur sang “Dilrubaon Ke Jalwe” in “Dulha Mil Gaya” and “Ishq Mein” in “Prince.” She also contributed to the soundtrack of “Anjaana Anjaani” with the song “Anjaana Anjaani Ki Kahani.”
The following year, she lent her voice to songs in films like “Rascals,” “United Six,” and “Bbuddah… Hoga Terra Baap.” She also recorded tracks for Bengali film “Fighter.”
In 2012, Thakur collaborated with Atif Aslam for “Tu Mohabbat Hai” from “Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya” and sang “Aga Bai” from “Aiyyaa.” She also contributed to the soundtrack of Bengali film “Aparajita Tumi” with the song “Shadow Tales.”
In 2013, Thakur delivered the critically acclaimed song “Sawaar Loon” from “Lootera,” which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. She also sang for films like “Ramaiya Vastavaiya,” “Rabba Main Kya Karoon,” “Nasha,” and “Krrish 3.”
Her debut as an actress came in 2014 with the film “Lakshmi,” where she portrayed the lead role. Despite mixed reviews for the film, Thakur’s performance received praise, and she won the Best Actress Award at the South-Asian International Film Festival.
In 2015, Thakur sang “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” from “Dum Laga Ke Haisha,” which became a chartbuster and won her several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
In 2018, Thakur appeared in the Zee5 show “Lockdown” and released several singles, including “Tamanna,” “Shy Mora Saiyaan,” “O Re Naseeba,” “Pani Pani Re,” and “Dugga Elo.”
Throughout the years, Thakur has continued to contribute to the music industry with hit songs like “Cham Cham” from “Baaghi” and “Badrinath Ki Dulhania” title track. She has also released singles like “Dil Ka Fitoor,” “Aaina,” and “Elo Maa Dugga Thakur.”
