Career

He began his musical journey during childhood, and his professional career took off with the Odia film “Manini” in 1979 under the guidance of renowned Odia music composer Radha Krushna Bhanja. Later, he became known for singing numerous songs for Odia and Ollywood actor Siddhanta Mahapatra. In 1986, he ventured into Bengali cinema with the film “Bouma.”

Seeking better opportunities, he moved to Mumbai and got his break in Bollywood with the film “Ambar” in 1984, introduced by music director Sapan-Jagmohan. However, it was his performance in the film “Mard,” with music by Anu Malik, that gained him significant recognition, especially for the hit song “Mard Tangewala.” This success led to more hits in 1985, like “Aate Aate Teri Yaad Aa Gayi” from “Jaan Ki Baazi,” making him one of the most sought-after singers in Bollywood during that decade.

Throughout his career, he collaborated with many esteemed music directors, including Naushad, Shankar–Jaikishan, R. D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, and many others. Notably, he recorded over 250 songs for Laxmikant Pyarelal, the highest number for any composer.

Aside from playback singing, he lent his voice to TV serials like the title song of “Jai Hanuman.” He also performed in stage shows across India and abroad. Mohammed Aziz’s versatile voice graced the songs picturized on a wide array of Bollywood actors, including Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Shah Rukh Khan, and many more. He also sang duets with renowned singers like Kishore Kumar, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, and Kumar Sanu, among others.
