Career
Miley Cyrus auditioned for the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana when she was thirteen. Initially auditioning for the role of the title character’s best friend, her performance led to her being considered for the lead role. Though initially rejected for being “too small and too young,” her singing and goofy acting abilities ultimately landed her the lead role. The series premiered in March 2006 to record-breaking Disney Channel audiences and quickly became one of the highest-rated series on basic cable. This success established Cyrus as a “teen idol.”
She toured with the Cheetah Girls as Hannah Montana in September 2006, performing songs from the show’s first season. That October, Walt Disney Records released a soundtrack credited to her character, which topped the Billboard 200 chart and sold over three million copies worldwide. With this, Cyrus became the first Disney act to have deals in television, film, consumer products, and music.
Cyrus signed a four-album deal with Hollywood Records for her music outside of Hannah Montana. In June 2007, she released the two-disc album Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus. The first disc was the second Hannah Montana soundtrack, and the second disc was Cyrus’s debut studio album. The album topped the Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies. The lead single, “See You Again,” was a commercial success, selling over two million copies in the US.
She collaborated with her father on the single “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” and embarked on the highly successful Best of Both Worlds Tour (2007–08) to promote the album. This tour led to the release of the 3D concert film Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (2008), which was extended due to its success.
In February 2008, Cyrus and friend Mandy Jiroux began posting videos on YouTube called “The Miley and Mandy Show,” which gained a large online following. In April 2008, controversial photos of Cyrus in her underwear and swimsuit were leaked online, and further controversy arose from her seemingly topless photoshoot for Vanity Fair at age fifteen, although she was wrapped in a bed sheet.
Despite this, she released her second studio album, Breakout, in June 2008, which topped the Billboard 200. Cyrus made her film debut in the animated movie Bolt (2008) and co-wrote the song “I Thought I Lost You” for the film, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song.
In March 2009, Cyrus released “The Climb” from the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack, which became a crossover hit in both pop and country music. The soundtrack topped the Billboard 200, making Cyrus the youngest artist to have four number-one albums on the chart. Her fourth Hannah Montana soundtrack debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.
Cyrus then launched her fashion line, Miley Cyrus and Max Azria, and released the EP The Time of Our Lives, featuring the successful single “Party in the U.S.A.” She embarked on the Wonder World Tour (2009), which was critically and commercially successful.
In 2010, Cyrus starred in The Last Song, hoping to shift to a more mature image. The film was a box office hit despite negative reviews. Her third studio album, Can’t Be Tamed (2010), featured a more dance-oriented sound and stirred controversy with its lyrical content and performances. She embarked on the worldwide Gypsy Heart Tour in 2011, avoiding North America due to controversies. Cyrus parted ways with Hollywood Records and announced a hiatus from music to focus on acting, appearing on Saturday Night Live and starring in the film LOL (2012).
In 2013, Cyrus signed with RCA Records and began working on her fourth studio album with producers like Pharrell Williams and Mike Will Made-It. She released “We Can’t Stop,” which became a worldwide success, followed by the controversial “Wrecking Ball.” The accompanying music video broke Vevo records and became her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Cyrus’s fourth studio album, Bangerz, was released in October 2013, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. She hosted Saturday Night Live and was declared Artist of the Year by MTV in 2013.
In 2014, Cyrus launched her Bangerz Tour, which received positive reviews. She collaborated with the Flaming Lips on their remake of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and began working on her fifth studio album. She released Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz for free streaming in 2015, an experimental and psychedelic album produced primarily by Cyrus.
In 2016, Cyrus joined The Voice as a key advisor and later as a coach, becoming the youngest coach in the series’ history. She starred in Woody Allen’s Crisis in Six Scenes and released “Malibu” as the lead single from her sixth album, Younger Now, in 2017. The album featured the single “Inspired” and was promoted with performances at the One Love Manchester benefit concert and the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. Cyrus also returned as a coach for the thirteenth season of The Voice. However, she confirmed that she would not release further singles from Younger Now or tour for the album.
Before releasing “Younger Now” in September 2017, Miley Cyrus revealed she had already started working on her next album, with two songs completed. She collaborated with producers Mike Will Made It, Mark Ronson, and Andrew Wyatt. Her first collaboration with Ronson, “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart,” came out on November 29, 2018, as part of Ronson’s 2019 album “Late Night Feelings.”
The song received significant commercial success, especially in Europe, where it peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and in Ireland, and topped the charts in several Eastern European countries, including Hungary and Croatia.
In early 2019, Cyrus became notable for her cover songs. She had participated in the MusiCares Person of the Year event in 2018 to celebrate Fleetwood Mac and returned the following year to honor her godmother Dolly Parton, performing “Islands in the Stream” with Shawn Mendes. They also performed “In My Blood” together at the 61st Grammy Awards.
Cyrus covered Ariana Grande’s “No Tears Left to Cry” for BBC Radio’s Live Lounge, sang “As Hope & Promise Fade” at the Chris Cornell tribute concert “I Am The Highway,” and recorded Elton John’s “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” for the tribute album “Revamp: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin.” She also honored John at the “I’m Still Standing: A Grammy Salute to Elton John” tribute concert by covering “The Bitch Is Back.”
On May 31, 2019, Cyrus announced her seventh studio album would be titled “She Is Miley Cyrus,” which would consist of three six-song EPs: “She Is Coming,” “She Is Here,” and “She Is Everything.” “She Is Coming,” released on May 31, 2019, included collaborations with RuPaul, Swae Lee, Mike Will Made It, and Ghostface Killah. It debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200.
The lead single “Mother’s Daughter” peaked at number 54 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The Wuki remix of “Mother’s Daughter” was nominated for Best Remixed Recording at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, and the original music video won two MTV Video Music Awards. Cyrus promoted the EP with a summer European tour, performing at major festivals like Glastonbury and Primavera Sound.
Cyrus starred in the “Black Mirror” episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” released on Netflix on June 5, 2019. In the episode, she played fictional pop star Ashley O and voiced her AI doll, Ashley Too. The episode was compared to Britney Spears’s conservatorship, a cause Cyrus supported. The music video for the song “On a Roll” from the episode was released on June 13, and the song itself, along with “Right Where I Belong,” was released to digital platforms the next day.
On June 27, 2019, it was revealed that Cyrus had collaborated with Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey on “Don’t Call Me Angel,” the lead single of the soundtrack to the 2019 film “Charlie’s Angels,” released on September 13, 2019. In August 2019, Cyrus released “Slide Away,” her first song since announcing her separation from then-husband Liam Hemsworth. The song hinted at their breakup, with lyrics reflecting their parting ways. The music video, released in September 2019, included further references to their relationship, such as a ten of hearts playing card at the bottom of a pool symbolizing the end of their decade-long relationship.
On August 14, 2020, Cyrus released “Midnight Sky,” the lead single from her seventh studio album, “Plastic Hearts.” She confirmed the cancellation of the EPs “She Is Here” and “She Is Everything” due to major changes in her life, including her divorce from Hemsworth and the loss of their house in the California wildfires. “Midnight Sky” became her highest-charting solo single since “Malibu” in 2017, peaking at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the UK Singles Chart.
In October, Cyrus held her third Backyard Session on MTV and announced on Instagram that “Plastic Hearts” would be released on November 27, 2020. Initially intended to be called “She Is Miley Cyrus,” the album was released to positive reviews and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. It marked a shift to rock and glam rock for Cyrus and included collaborations with Billy Idol and Joan Jett. The album featured singles like “Prisoner” with Dua Lipa and “Angels like You.” Due to popular demand, Cyrus included live covers of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and The Cranberries’ “Zombie.”
In February 2021, Cyrus performed at the first TikTok Tailgate show for vaccinated healthcare workers before Super Bowl LV. The performance was featured in the music video for “Angels like You.” In March 2021, Cyrus left RCA and signed with Columbia Records. She wrote an open letter to her character Hannah Montana for the show’s 15th anniversary, despite previous statements about the role causing her an identity crisis. Rumors of a possible show revival emerged. In April 2021, Cyrus was featured on a remix of “Without You” by The Kid Laroi, her first release under Columbia Records. She performed at the NCAA March Madness Final Four in Indianapolis for healthcare workers.
In May 2021, Cyrus signed an overall deal with NBCUniversal, which included a first-look deal with her studio Hopetown Entertainment. The first project from this deal was the “Stand By You” Pride concert special, released on Peacock in June. That same month, Cyrus released a cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” for “The Metallica Blacklist,” a tribute album. The track featured Elton John on piano, Yo-Yo Ma, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith. Cyrus teased a Metallica cover album in October 2020 and performed the song live at Glastonbury.
Cyrus planned a tour to promote “Plastic Hearts,” but it was postponed due to the pandemic. She headlined several music festivals in summer 2021, including Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, and Music Midtown. She announced a South American tour for early 2022, her first in seven years. In December 2021, Cyrus co-hosted “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” with Pete Davidson, featuring performances by various artists.
In February 2022, Cyrus embarked on the Attention Tour to support “Plastic Hearts,” performing in North, South, and Central America. This marked her first tour to South America since 2011. The tour ended on March 26, 2022. On April 1, 2022, she released her third live album, “Attention: Miley Live,” featuring songs from her previous albums and cover songs. The deluxe version, released later that month, included additional songs from her performances at the Lollapalooza festival in Brazil and other shows in Latin America. In May, NBC announced the renewal of “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” for a second iteration.
In August 2022, Cyrus was set to star in a Christmas television film, “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas,” produced by Dolly Parton for NBC. In December 2022, Morrissey announced that Cyrus wanted her backing vocals removed from his upcoming record.

The song achieved significant success, debuting at number one on various charts and topping the charts in 37 countries.
