Career

Ray’s modeling career began unexpectedly during a family vacation in India when she was still a teenager. She caught the attention of an advertisement for Bombay Dyeing, where she appeared in a black swimsuit opposite Karan Kapoor, which marked her first taste of public attention. This led to a meeting with Maureen Wadia, editor of Gladrags magazine, resulting in an iconic swimsuit cover that brought Ray nationwide fame in India.

In 2001, Ray made her debut in the Indian film industry with the Hindi film “Kasoor,” opposite Aftab Shivdasani. Despite her inability to speak Hindi, her performance received positive reviews. This caught the eye of Deepa Mehta, who cast her in “Bollywood/Hollywood” in 2002.

Ray moved to London to focus on acting, studying at various institutions and eventually graduating with a post-graduate degree in acting in 2004. During her studies, she received an offer from Deepa Mehta to star in “Water.” The film, released in 2005, garnered critical acclaim globally.

After graduation, Ray based herself in Milan, Paris, and New York until 2008. During this time, she appeared in various international productions, including the British romantic comedy “I Can’t Think Straight” in 2008.

In 2009, Ray revealed she had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare form of cancer, while attending the Toronto International Film Festival. Despite her health challenges, she continued to pursue acting and appeared in several projects, including “Cooking with Stella” and the USA Network series “Psych.”

Ray underwent a stem cell transplant on Christmas in 2009 and announced in April 2010 that she was cancer-free. She became an advocate for cancer awareness and appeared in the documentary “1 a Minute.” In 2011, Ray acted in the stage play “Taj” and appeared in the fantasy drama film “Patch Town.” She also hosted the IIFA Awards and co-presented the Giller Prize.

In 2012, Ray began hosting season two of “Top Chef Canada” and continued to explore diverse roles in film.In 2016, she starred in “Veerappan” and played a supporting role in “Dobaara” in 2017.

Since 2019, Ray has been part of the ensemble cast of the Amazon Prime Video web series “Four More Shots Please!” which has seen successful seasons in 2020 and 2022.
