Career
Kunchacko Boban, often called Chackochan, was introduced to the Malayalam film industry by the versatile director Fazil. He made his debut in the film “Aniathipravu” in 1997, co-starring Shalini. Directed by Fazil, the movie became the highest-grossing Malayalam film at the time. Kunchacko’s portrayal of Sudhi, the lead character, was well-received, especially by young audiences and families. The pairing of Kunchacko Boban and Shalini was considered one of the best in the Malayalam film industry.
Following the success of “Aniathipravu,” Kunchacko starred in several hit films, including “Nakshathrathaarattu” and “Mayilpeelikkavu” in 1998, and “Niram” in 1999. “Niram” was one of the highest-grossing films of 1999, with its songs remaining popular. He reunited with director Fazil in “Harikrishnans,” where he played a cameo role. This film marked the reunion of actors Mohanlal and Mammootty after nine years and was the highest-grossing Malayalam film of the year.
Kunchacko continued his success with commercially successful films such as “Priyam” (2000), “Sathyam Sivam Sundaram” (2000), “Dosth” (2001), “Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka” (2001), and “Kalyanaraman” (2002). After his marriage in 2005, he took a break from films.
He returned to the film industry in 2008 with a special appearance in the song “Twenty:20” and later acted in Shafi’s “LollyPop.” His real comeback came in 2009 with the comedy film “Gulumal: The Escape,” directed by V. K. Prakash. This film marked a significant shift in his screen image and was followed by a series of successful films.
In 2010, Kunchacko played lead roles in “Mummy & Me” directed by Jeethu Joseph, “Sakudumbam Shyamala,” and Lal Jose’s “Elsamma Enna Aankutty,” all of which were commercial successes. His performance in “Elsamma Enna Aankutty” received particular praise.
In 2011, he starred in the road thriller “Traffic,” which gained critical acclaim and was part of the New Generation trend in Malayalam cinema. He also played a negative role in “Seniors,” a commercial success, earning him the SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role. Other films from that year included “Three Kings,” “Sevens,” and “Doctor Love,” and he won the Youth Icon award at the Asianet Film Awards.
In 2012, Kunchacko featured in “Spanish Masala,” “Ordinary,” and “Mallu Singh.” In “Spanish Masala,” he played a full-length negative role. “Ordinary” and “Mallu Singh” both became major commercial successes.
He began 2013 with the comedy thriller “Romans,” which was a blockbuster. Other films that year included “3 Dots,” “God for Sale: Bhakthi Prasthanam,” “Kadhaveedu,” “Vishudhan,” and “Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum,” which was also a commercial success. His performances in “God for Sale: Bhakthi Prasthanam,” “Vishudhan,” “Kadhaveedu,” “How Old Are You” (2014), “Madhura Naranga” (2015), “Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal” (2015), and “Vettah” (2016) earned him critical acclaim.
“Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal,” directed by Dr. Biju, was an eye-opener about the effects of endosulfan in Northern Kerala villages. The film was screened at the United Nations and selected for various prestigious film festivals, winning the national award for Best Film on environmental preservation.
In 2016, Kunchacko revived Udaya Pictures, the iconic Malayalam production house, debuting as a producer with “Kochauvva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho.”
In 2017, he starred in “Take Off,” “Ramante Eden Thottam,” and “Varnyathil Aashanka,” earning numerous accolades for his mature and versatile acting. “Take Off” received several awards in state, national, and international competitions. He won the Family Hero award at the Vanitha Film Awards and the Best Actor Critics Award at the Asianet Film Awards. This film marked the 20th anniversary of his debut in “Aniyathipravu.”
Kunchacko began 2018 with successful films like “Shikkari Shambhu,” “Kuttanadan Marpappa,” and “Panchavarnathatha.” Later that year, he starred in “Mangalyam Thanthunanena” and “Johny Johny Yes Appa.” His final release of 2018 was Lal Jose’s “Thattumpurath Achuthan.”
In 2019, he appeared in the comedy-thriller “Allu Ramendran” and the medical thriller “Virus.” Both films were commercially successful, with his performances receiving high praise. His first release of 2020 was the crime thriller “Anjaam Pathiraa,” in which he played the central character Anwar Hussain. The film received highly positive reviews and became the first blockbuster of 2020 in the Malayalam film industry.
In 2021, Kunchacko started with three movies: “Nayattu,” which was critically acclaimed, and “Nizhal” and “Mohan Kumar Fans,” both released on OTT platforms. “Mohan Kumar Fans” was praised for its blend of satire and emotional drama. He ended 2021 with “Bheemante Vazhi,” released in theaters and later on Amazon Prime Video.
In 2022, he starred in the political social-thriller film “Pada” and later in “Ariyippu” and “Nna Thaan Case Kodu,” all of which received highly positive reviews. In 2023, he was part of the multistarrer “2018,” based on the Kerala floods.
