Career

Kimi Katkar started her acting career in 1985 with a supporting role in the film “Patthar Dil.” In the same year, she landed her first lead role opposite Hemant Birje in “Adventures of Tarzan.” Throughout the late 1980s, she became a prominent face in Bollywood with roles in popular films like “Mera Lahoo” (1987), “Dariya Dil” (1988), “Sone Pe Suhaaga” (1988), “Gair Kanooni” (1989), “Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharnii” (1989), and “Khoon Ka Karz” (1991).

During her peak years of 1988 to 1990, she appeared in 35 movies, a remarkable feat in the industry. In 1989 alone, she had a staggering 15 releases. Her on-screen chemistry with actors like Anil Kapoor, Govinda, and Aditya Pancholi was notable, but she also shared the screen with veteran stars like Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, and Rishi Kapoor.

Her significant role came in the 1991 film “Hum,” where she starred opposite the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. The movie featured the popular song “Jumma Chumma De,” which became a sensation, with Katkar captivating audiences in its picturization.

However, despite her success, Katkar chose to step away from the limelight after her marriage to photographer and ad-filmmaker Shantanu Sheorey in 1992. Her final film was “Humlaa” in the same year. Interestingly, during her acting years, she turned down roles, including one in Yash Chopra’s “Parampara,” which was eventually portrayed by Ramya Krishna.

Post-retirement, she settled in Melbourne, Australia, with her husband. Notably, she has a connection with the book “Shantaram,” as its author, Gregory David Roberts, was an Australian fugitive who found refuge in India. Roberts even worked as an extra in films like “Paanch Paapi” (1989), which featured Katkar.
