Career

Kate Walsh began her career working at fast-food outlets before transitioning to modeling and teaching English in Japan during the 1980s. Later, she moved to Chicago where she worked with the Piven Theatre Workshop. In the mid-1990s, Walsh appeared in her first film, “Normal Life,” followed by roles in “Peppermills” and “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II.”

In 1996, she made her television debut in the “Homicide: Life on the Street” episode “Stakeout” and later appeared in “Law & Order.” Walsh’s first major TV role came in 1997 on “The Drew Carey Show” as Drew’s love interest, Nicki Fifer. She went on to appear in “The Mind of the Married Man,” “The Norm Show,” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” She also made guest appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

In 2003, Walsh landed a recurring role on “Karen Sisco” as Detective Marley Novak. Two years later, she achieved breakout success as Dr. Addison Montgomery in the ABC series “Grey’s Anatomy.” Her character received a spin-off series called “Private Practice,” which premiered in 2007. Walsh appeared in both shows until 2013.

During the 2010s, Walsh appeared in various TV series including “Full Circle,” “Fargo,” “The Hotwives of Orlando,” “Bad Judge,” and “13 Reasons Why.” She also had a significant recurring role in “The Umbrella Academy” and starred in “Emily in Paris.” In 2021, she announced her return as Dr. Addison Montgomery in the eighteenth season of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

In film, Walsh starred in “Kicking & Screaming” in 2005, alongside Will Ferrell. She also appeared in “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Legion,” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

Walsh made her off-Broadway debut in 2010 in the play “Dusk Rings a Bell” and had a successful theater career in Chicago prior to that, appearing in various productions including “Happy Birthday Wanda June” and “Troilus and Cressida.”
