After college, Brenda Strong’s career took off when she appeared in Billy Crystal’s 1984 music video “You Look Marvelous.” Her first television roles came in 1985 with brief appearances on shows like “St. Elsewhere,” “MacGyver,” and “Cheers.” Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, she guest-starred on various TV series, including “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Matlock,” and “Murphy Brown.” In 1990, Strong had a recurring role in the ABC series “Twin Peaks.” She made her film debut in the 1986 comedy “Weekend Warriors” and had a supporting part in “Spaceballs” (1987).
In 1992, Strong starred in the short-lived CBS sitcom “Scorch.” Over the following decade, she played recurring and guest roles on numerous shows, including “Seinfeld,” “Party of Five,” and “Everwood.” She also appeared in films like “My Life,” “Malice,” and “The Craft.” From 1998 to 2000, Strong portrayed Sally Sasser in the ABC comedy-drama “Sports Night.” In 2004, she starred in The WB sitcom “The Help” as wealthy Arlene Ridgeway.
Strong’s most notable role came in 2004 when she joined the cast of “Desperate Housewives” as Mary Alice Young. She played the deceased narrator of the series until its end in 2012. During her time on the show, she received Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance and won two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
In 2012, Strong took on the role of Ann Ewing in the TNT series “Dallas,” a revival of the original CBS soap opera. After “Dallas,” Strong appeared in various TV series, including “The Mysteries of Laura,” “The 100,” and “Fear the Walking Dead.” She joined the cast of “Supergirl” in a recurring role as Lillian Luthor. In 2018, Strong appeared in the second season of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and was promoted to series regular status for its third season.
