Early Life

Hrithik Roshan was born on 10 January 1974 in Bombay to the renowned Roshan family associated with Hindi cinema. His background is a mix of Punjabi and Bengali heritage from his father’s side, with his paternal grandmother being Bengali. His father, Rakesh Roshan, is the son of the famous music director Roshanlal Nagrath, and his mother, Pinkie, is the daughter of producer and director J. Om Prakash. Hrithik has an older sister named Sunaina, and he received his education at the Bombay Scottish School.

Though born into a Hindu family, Hrithik considers himself more spiritual than religious. His family has played significant roles in the entertainment industry, with an uncle who is a music composer and his father, a well-known film director.

As a child, Hrithik faced challenges as he was born with an extra thumb fused to the one on his right hand. This made some of his peers avoid him, causing feelings of isolation. Additionally, he experienced stuttering from a young age, leading to difficulties in school, where he even faked illness to avoid oral tests. Daily speech therapy helped him overcome his stutter.

Hrithik’s journey in the film industry began at the age of six when his grandfather, Prakash, brought him on-screen in the film “Aasha” (1980). Despite uncredited appearances in various family film projects, Hrithik’s first speaking role came at the age of 12 in “Bhagwaan Dada” (1986). Despite his early interest in becoming a full-time actor, his father encouraged him to focus on studies.

In his early 20s, Hrithik faced a setback when diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition limiting his ability to dance or perform stunts. Determined to pursue acting, he overcame this obstacle and considered it a turning point in his life. He attended Sydenham College, participating in dance and music festivals while studying commerce. Hrithik assisted his father on several films and studied acting under Kishore Namit Kapoor.

Career

Hrithik Roshan was initially set to debut as a lead actor in the canceled film “Tara Rum Pum Pum” opposite Preity Zinta. However, fate had other plans, and he made his debut in his father’s romantic drama “Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai” (2000) alongside Ameesha Patel. In the film, he played dual roles, receiving acclaim for his performance. The movie became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2000, establishing Roshan as a prominent actor.

His second film, “Fiza” (2000), directed by Khalid Mohammed, showcased Roshan’s versatility as he portrayed Amaan, an innocent Muslim boy turned terrorist after the 1992–93 Bombay riots. Although “Fiza” was moderately successful, Roshan’s performance earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Filmfare Awards.

In 2001, Roshan appeared in Subhash Ghai’s “Yaadein,” which received mixed reviews, but he gained widespread recognition with Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…” (2001), playing the role of Rohan Raichand. The film became a massive success, marking Roshan’s first supporting role and earning him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

The year 2002 saw Roshan in films like “Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage” and “Na Tum Jaano Na Hum,” both failing to perform well at the box office. Despite facing setbacks with these films, Roshan continued his journey with projects like “Koi… Mil Gaya” (2003), directed by his father, which brought him critical acclaim and several awards.

Roshan’s career saw ups and downs, with movies like “Lakshya” (2004) and “Dhoom 2” (2006) showcasing his diverse acting skills. “Krrish” (2006), a superhero film and sequel to “Koi… Mil Gaya,” became a massive hit, solidifying Roshan’s position as a leading actor in Bollywood.

His portrayal of Akbar in Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Jodhaa Akbar” (2008) earned him accolades and his fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award. Roshan’s commitment to roles, ranging from a superhero to historical characters, displayed his versatility.

After a brief appearance in Zoya Akhtar’s “Luck by Chance” in 2009, Hrithik Roshan took the lead in the multi-national romantic thriller “Kites” (2010). Produced by his father, the film depicted Roshan as a man orchestrating a green card scam in Las Vegas. While “Kites” opened on a record-breaking 3000 screens and made history by entering the North American top 10, it faced criticism for its multilingual dialogues and garnered negative reviews. Despite the setbacks, Roshan persisted in exploring diverse roles.

Teaming up with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Roshan starred in the drama “Guzaarish” (2010), portraying Ethan Mascarenhas, a former magician battling quadriplegia. Although the film did not fare well commercially, Roshan’s performance received acclaim. His dedication extended to interacting with paraplegic patients for a better understanding of the role.

In 2011, Roshan featured in Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble comedy-drama “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” portraying an uptight workaholic on a transformative bachelor trip. The film received positive reviews, marking Roshan’s return to commercial success after three years. Later that year, he made a special appearance in Farhan Akhtar’s “Don 2.”

In 2012, Roshan played the lead in Karan Malhotra’s “Agneepath,” a modern retelling of the 1990 film. Despite facing challenges during filming, including a painful back injury, Roshan’s portrayal of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan earned acclaim. The film became a commercial success, setting a new opening-day earnings record in Bollywood.

The Krrish film series continued with “Krrish 3” (2013), where Roshan reprised his role alongside Priyanka Chopra, Vivek Oberoi, and Kangana Ranaut. The film, although criticized for lacking originality, became one of the highest-grossing Indian films. Roshan’s performance received praise, showcasing his versatility.

In 2014, Roshan starred in the action comedy “Bang Bang!,” a remake of Hollywood’s “Knight and Day.” Notably, he performed a flyboarding stunt, marking a first for an actor in a film. Despite an injury during the Thailand shoot, Roshan’s performance was well-received, and the film achieved significant global ticket sales.

The historical epic “Mohenjo Daro” (2016) saw Roshan portraying a farmer in 2016 BC who travels to Mohenjo-daro. Despite its anticipation, the film faced commercial failure and mixed reviews. Roshan’s commitment to the role, however, earned appreciation.

Following a two-year hiatus, Roshan returned in 2019 with Vikas Bahl’s “Super 30,” a biographical film based on mathematician Anand Kumar. The film, despite mixed reviews, became a commercial success. Roshan’s next venture in the action thriller “War” (2019) solidified his commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2019.

In 2022, Roshan starred in “Vikram Vedha,” a remake of the Tamil film, receiving positive reviews for his menacing portrayal. Subsequently, he featured in the commercially successful action film “Fighter” (2024) alongside Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor. Roshan’s performance was lauded for its emotional depth.

Looking ahead, Roshan is set to lead the sequel “War 2” within the YRF Spy Universe, showcasing his continued commitment to diverse and challenging roles.
