Career

In September 2009, Charlie Puth launched his YouTube channel, Charlies Vlogs, where he posted comedy videos and acoustic covers. The following year, he released the music video for his first song, “These Are My Sexy Shades.” In December 2010, Puth independently released his debut extended play, The Otto Tunes.

In 2011, Puth won an online video competition sponsored by Perez Hilton called Can You Sing? with a version of Adele’s “Someone like You,” performed with Emily Luther. Ellen DeGeneres saw their performance and signed both to her label, eleveneleven. They performed the song on her show, and in December 2012, Puth released a promotional single, “Break Again,” featuring Luther. They also performed the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January 2012. Later that year, Puth performed at an event supporting DKMS Delete Blood Cancer. He left eleveneleven at the end of 2012.

On October 23, 2013, Puth released his second independent extended play, Ego, online. He also wrote and produced songs and jingles for various YouTube personalities, including the theme song for Shane Dawson’s podcast Shane and Friends, the intro jingle for the SHAYTARDS, and the original theme song for Charles Trippy’s vlog Internet Killed Television. He wrote a song for the tour and movie of the YouTube group Our 2nd Life and several singles for group member Ricky Dillon.
