Career

Akhtar began her career in the film industry, initially working as a co-director for a music video called “Price of Bullets” for the rock band Pentagram. She later ventured into casting direction for films such as “Split Wide Open” and “Dil Chahta Hai.” Additionally, she served as an assistant director for her brother Farhan Akhtar’s films “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Lakshya.”

In 2009, Akhtar made her directorial debut with the drama “Luck By Chance,” starring her brother Farhan and Konkona Sen Sharma. Despite its critical acclaim, the film had a modest performance at the box office. However, Akhtar’s work earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director.

Her breakthrough came in 2011 with the coming-of-age comedy-drama “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” which received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. This marked her first Filmfare Award for Best Director.

Following this success, Akhtar co-wrote the psychological crime thriller “Talaash: The Answer Lies Within” in 2012, which was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 2013, she contributed to the anthology film “Bombay Talkies” with her segment titled “Sheila Ki Jawaani.”

In 2015, Akhtar directed the ensemble family comedy-drama “Dil Dhadakne Do,” which was praised for its storytelling and performances. In 2018, she collaborated with other directors for the anthology film “Lust Stories” and also co-founded Tiger Baby Films with Reema Kagti.

The following year, Akhtar directed the musical drama “Gully Boy,” which received critical acclaim and became a commercial success. It won numerous awards, including several Filmfare Awards.

In 2019, she co-created the web series “Made in Heaven,” which garnered widespread critical acclaim. In 2020, Akhtar worked on the horror anthology film “Ghost Stories.” In 2023, she co-created the crime thriller web series “Dahaad,” which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Looking ahead, Akhtar directed the live-action feature film adaptation of The Archies and collaborated on the romantic drama “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan,” scheduled for release in 2024.
