Vidyut Jammwal, born in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, has a diverse background with a Rajput father and a Malayali mother. Growing up as one of three children in an Army officer’s family, he experienced a nomadic lifestyle due to his father’s transferable job.

From a young age, Vidyut displayed an early interest in martial arts, specifically Kalaripayattu. His mother, who ran an ashram in Palakkad, Kerala, became his initial instructor in this ancient Indian martial art form when he was just three years old. He dedicated himself to training in Kalaripayattu, honing his skills under his mother’s guidance.

As part of his martial arts journey, Vidyut Jammwal embarked on a global exploration. He traveled to numerous countries, engaging with martial artists and learning various forms, many of which have their roots in Kalaripayattu. These experiences allowed him to participate in live action shows in over 25 countries, showcasing his martial arts prowess.

Career

Vidyut Jammwal marked his Bollywood debut in 2011 with the film “Force,” starring alongside John Abraham. The movie, a remake of the Tamil-language film “Kaakha Kaakha,” showcased Jammwal in a negative role, earning him multiple best debut awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

In the same year, Jammwal ventured into Telugu cinema, playing negative roles in “Shakti” and “Oosaravelli,” both featuring NTR. His negative roles earned him recognition.

In 2012, he made his debut in Tamil cinema with “Billa II,” portraying the antagonist opposite Ajith Kumar, receiving critical acclaim. The same year, Jammwal played the antagonist in the blockbuster “Thuppakki” alongside actor Vijay, earning a SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role.

Transitioning to Hindi cinema, Jammwal took on the role of a protagonist in the action-packed film “Commando” (2013), where he performed real-world combat-based action without the aid of stuntmen. The film gained international recognition and positive feedback, with some considering him India’s answer to Bruce Lee and Tony Jaa.

Following the success of “Commando,” Jammwal continued to showcase his versatility. In 2014, he played a supporting role in the Tamil film “Anjaan” alongside Suriya. In 2019, Jammwal featured in Chuck Russell’s Bollywood film “Junglee” and “Commando 3,” marking a return to the Commando series and becoming the most successful film in the franchise. He also starred in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s “Yaara,” an official remake of the French film “Les Lyonnais.”
