Career
Thackeray commenced his political career in 2002 by serving as the campaign incharge of Shiv Sena during the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections, where the party achieved success. By 2003, he was appointed as the working president of Shiv Sena. Meanwhile, his cousin Raj Thackeray left the party in 2006 to establish his own political entity, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
Following the demise of his father, Bal Thackeray, in 2012, Uddhav Thackeray assumed leadership of Shiv Sena. He was elected as the party president in 2013. Under his leadership, Shiv Sena became part of the NDA government in Maharashtra in 2014.
In 2019, Shiv Sena broke away from the NDA and joined the UPA, forming a sub-alliance called Maha Vikas Aghadi to govern Maharashtra, with Uddhav Thackeray as the chief minister. In 2022, during a party meeting, Uddhav Thackeray justified his decision to leave the NDA, citing betrayal and attempts to undermine Shiv Sena’s position within Maharashtra. He accused the BJP of disregarding its allies for political convenience.
Despite not initially holding any constitutional post, Thackeray assumed the role of Chief Minister of Maharashtra on November 28, 2019, following a brief political crisis and the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition. Thackeray’s tenure as Chief Minister saw initiatives aimed at combating climate change, including plans for Mumbai to become carbon-neutral by 2050.
However, in June 2022, Thackeray faced a rebellion within his party, leading to his resignation as Chief Minister ahead of a floor test. Despite legal challenges, Eknath Shinde’s faction gained recognition as the legitimate Shiv Sena party, challenging Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership.
