Career

Büyüküstün began her TV journey in 2003 with the last four episodes of Sultan Makamı on Channel D. After that, she took on the role of Zarife in Çemberimde Gül Oya in 2004 and starred in Ihlamurlar Altında in 2005, making her popular in the Middle East. She played the lead in the drama series Asi from 2007 to 2009, alongside Murat Yıldırım and Çetin Tekindor.

In 2010, she acted with Cansel Elçin in Gönülçelen. In 2012, she starred in the series 20 Dakika, earning her a nomination for the 42nd International Emmy Award for Best Actress. Büyüküstün became a UNICEF goodwill ambassador in 2014 and later starred in Kara Para Aşk (2014–15) with Engin Akyürek. Her next series, Cesur ve Güzel, aired from November 10, 2016, where she played the lead opposite Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ. In 2021, she appeared as Mavi in Sefirin Kizi. She also ventured into web series, portraying Mara Branković in Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020) on Netflix and starring in “Another Self” in 2022.

Turning to the film industry, she played the title character in the TV movie Gülizar in 2004. She portrayed Aysun in the film Babam ve Oğlum in 2005 and played a teacher in the 2006 movie Sınav, acting alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme. Her cinema breakthrough came in 2010 with the leading role of Esma in Yüreğine Sor by Yusuf Kurçenli.

Personal Life

Büyüküstün’s mom and dad are originally from Erzurum. Her grandparents moved to Turkey from different places. On her mom’s side, they came from Crimea, and on her dad’s side, they were immigrants from Crete, Greece. She went to Mimar Sinan University to study costume and design and finished in 2004.

On 28 July 2011, Büyüküstün got married to the Turkish actor Onur Saylak in Paris, France. In January 2012, she became a mom to twin girls named Maya and Toprak. Unfortunately, the couple separated on 5 June 2017.
