Biography
Teji Bachchan, renowned for her social activism, was born into an affluent Punjabi Khatri family in Lahore. Her father, Khazan Singh Suri, was a well-known Barrister in British India. Growing up, Teji developed a passion for literature, particularly poetry, which she nurtured by reading the works of contemporary scholars.
She met her husband, the celebrated Indian poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, during her teaching stint at Khoob Chand Degree College in Lahore. Their first encounter took place at the home of a mutual friend, Prakash, in Bareilly. Harivansh Rai was instantly captivated by Teji’s beauty and they eventually fell in love, leading to their marriage in 1941.
Teji was not only a supportive wife but also a talented theater artist and singer. Alongside Harivansh Rai, they became a popular “singing duo” in Allahabad, where they settled. Teji also showcased her acting skills in various Shakespearean plays translated by her husband, including Macbeth and Othello.
Their association with the film industry extended to a cameo appearance in Yash Chopra’s film “Kabhie Kabhie” in 1976. Teji’s social circle included prominent figures like Indira Gandhi, with whom she developed a close bond during their time in Delhi in the late ’50s. Teji played a significant role in facilitating Sonia Gandhi’s integration into the Gandhi family, guiding her through Indian customs and rituals.
She even influenced pivotal decisions, such as persuading Indira Gandhi to approve the marriage of Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Teji was instrumental in shaping her son Amitabh Bachchan’s career in acting, introducing him to theater, films, and music. She encouraged him to pursue acting despite her husband’s preference for focusing on studies.
Throughout her life, Teji remained deeply connected to her roots and ensured her children were grounded in Indian culture and values. She was affectionately called “Munna” by Amitabh and played a pivotal role in his personal and professional life.
Teji passed away in 2007 after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and unwavering support for her family. Her contributions to Indian society and culture continue to be remembered and celebrated.
