Early Life

Sushant Singh Rajput was born in Patna, Bihar, to Krishna Kumar Singh and Usha Singh. His father, a retired technical officer, worked at Bihar State Handloom Corporation in Patna. Sushant, nicknamed Gulshan, was the youngest of five siblings. One of his sisters, Mitu Singh, was a state-level cricket player. He attended St. Karen’s High School in Patna, but the family moved to Delhi after his mother’s passing in 2002. In Delhi, Sushant completed his intermediate studies at Kulachi Hansraj Model School.

Known for his avid reading habit, Sushant had a deep interest in astrophysics and even won the National Olympiad in Physics. He gained admission to Delhi College of Engineering (later renamed Delhi Technological University) for a Bachelor of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering. Despite lacking interest in engineering, his family guided him towards it, leaving him dissatisfied. Sushant’s childhood dream was to become an astronaut or an air force pilot, but he also harbored an interest in Bollywood, inspired by his admiration for Shah Rukh Khan.

Career

During his time at Delhi College of Engineering, Rajput joined Shiamak Davar’s dance classes and later attended acting classes under theatre director Barry John. He found the experience liberating and dreamt of pursuing it forever. Sushant even appeared as a background dancer in Dhoom 2 and Aishwarya Rai’s performance at the 2006 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony. Despite being in his fourth year, he dropped out of engineering to pursue a career in arts and performance. Moving to Mumbai, he worked odd jobs and in theatre, joining Nadira Babbar’s Ekjute group for two and a half years.

Spotted by Balaji Telefilms’ casting team while working at Prithvi Theatre, Sushant got a second lead role in the TV series “Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil” in 2008. Due to his popularity, he returned for the series finale. Producer Ekta Kapoor then cast him as the lead in “Pavitra Rishta” against the channel’s initial reluctance.

In 2011, Mukesh Chhabra discovered Sushant for “Kai Po Che!” despite him planning to study filmmaking at Stanford University. The film, released in 2013, was a critical and commercial success, earning Sushant a Filmfare Awards nomination for Best Debut Actor. Before the film’s release, Rajput was signed by Rajkumar Hirani for “PK” and entered a deal with Yash Raj Films, starring in “Shuddh Desi Romance,” which became a sleeper hit.

Yash Raj Films and Dibakar Banerjee Productions jointly produced “Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!” in 2015, with Sushant in the lead role. Despite box office underperformance, the film received positive reviews. He also began collaborating with Shekhar Kapur for “Paani,” a future-set film dealing with water wars, but the project was suspended in 2015. Following this, Sushant ended his contract with Yash Raj Films.

In 2011, a film on the life of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was planned by his manager, Arun Pandey. Despite initial challenges, including objections from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Dhoni’s royalty demands, Sushant Singh Rajput was announced to play Dhoni in the biopic titled “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” directed by Neeraj Pandey. Released on 2 October 2016, the film portrayed Dhoni’s life from childhood to the 2011 Cricket World Cup victory. Despite not being skilled in cricket, Rajput trained for 13 months to capture Dhoni’s playing style.

Following the release, Rajput mentioned in an interview that he had signed up for five more films, including “Raabta,” “Takadum,” “Chanda Mama Door Ke,” another athlete’s biopic, and a Dharma Productions film featuring Jacqueline Fernandez. “Raabta,” released on 9 June 2017, received mixed reviews and was a box office flop. He also began shooting for Karan Johar’s film “Drive” in March 2017, but creative disagreements led to multiple release date delays, and the film was eventually postponed indefinitely.

In March 2017, Rajput was signed for Abhishek Kapoor’s film “Kedarnath,” a love story set against the 2013 floods in Uttarakhand. Co-starring with Sara Ali Khan, the film faced controversy for allegedly promoting Jihad, but it was released on 7 December 2018 and became a commercial success, ranking as the second-highest grossing among Rajput’s films after the Dhoni biopic.

On 2 May 2018, Sushant Singh Rajput joined a company called Innsaei Ventures, founded on 26 April 2018. In early 2018, Rajput started filming for “Sonchiriya,” a historical drama set in the 1970s. Released on 1 March 2019, the film received critical acclaim but was not a commercial success.

Before the release of “Sonchiriya,” Rajput mentioned being in talks for 12 other films, including “Chanda Mama Door Ke” and a biopic of Murlikant Petkar. He withdrew from “Chanda Mama Door Ke” due to scheduling conflicts, expressing his intention to produce his own space film through Innsaei Ventures.

On 6 January 2020, Rajput founded a non-profit organization named Front India for World Foundation, aiming to address poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and promote better healthcare and sanitation. In 2019, he was featured in Forbes’ annual Top 100 Celebrity list for the second time.

From 2017, Rajput was signed for Mukesh Chhabra’s directorial debut, a Hindi remake of “The Fault in Our Stars.” Titled “Dil Bechara,” it was released on Disney+ Hotstar on 8 May 2020, posthumously, after Rajput’s unfortunate demise.
