Mrinal Kulkarni’s acting journey began with the titular role in Girish Karnad’s Kannada film “Cheluvi,” based on “A Flowering Tree: A Woman’s Tale.” The film portrayed a young woman with a magical ability to transform into a tree. Shortly after, she made her Marathi film debut in “Mukta” (1994), directed by Jabbar Patel. The movie delves into the complexities of caste through the story of an upper-caste girl and a lower-caste boy.

In 1995, Kulkarni ventured into Tamil cinema with “May Maadham,” recommended by Mani Ratnam. Her noteworthy performance came in the NFDC-produced Marathi film “Doghi” (1995), earning her accolades and awards.

In 1996, she starred in “Daayraa,” part of Amol Palekar’s trilogy on sexuality. Despite acclaim abroad, its controversial theme barred it from Indian screens. During this time, she also appeared in the English-language film “Vrindavan Film Studios” and the Marathi drama “Gharabaher.”
