Career

During college, Sivakarthikeyan participated in various cultural events, showcasing his talent in mimicry and stand-up comedy. While pursuing his studies, he took a three-month break and, encouraged by his friends, auditioned for the comedy reality TV show “Kalakka Povathu Yaaru?” on Star Vijay. Initially reluctant, he eventually joined the show and emerged as the winner, starting his career as a mimicry artist. Sivakarthikeyan then appeared in short films like “Mugapputhagam,” directed by his friend Atlee, “Identity,” “Kurahl 786,” and “360°.”

His breakthrough came when the makers of the film “Aegan” noticed him and offered a supporting role, although his scenes were eventually cut from the final film. Director Pandiraj later approached Sivakarthikeyan to play the lead role in “Marina.” To prepare for the role, he closely followed Pandiraj’s instructions and spent considerable time at Marina Beach to study the environment, hoping his natural humor would shine on screen. His performance in “Marina,” alongside Oviya, was well-received, with critics praising his portrayal and the romantic subplot adding color to the film.

Before “Marina” was released, Aishwarya Dhanush cast Sivakarthikeyan in a supporting role in her film “3,” impressed by his stage hosting skills. The film, which starred Dhanush, received positive reviews, and Sivakarthikeyan’s comic relief in a serious film was appreciated. This project marked the beginning of his professional association with Dhanush, whom he considers his mentor.

Sivakarthikeyan then starred in Ezhil’s romantic comedy “Manam Kothi Paravai,” which received mixed reviews but performed decently at the box office. Critics noted that while the film might not be his breakthrough, it showcased his potential as an actor. In 2013, Sivakarthikeyan had a busy year with three film releases. The first was “Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga,” a dual-hero coming-of-age comedy directed by Pandiraj, shot in his hometown Tiruchirappalli alongside Vimal. The film was positively reviewed and became a surprise box office success. Next, he starred in “Ethir Neechal,” Dhanush’s debut production venture, written and directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar.

The story focused on a young man striving to establish himself as a runner. His third release, “Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam,” directed by Ponram, featured him as a carefree rural youth alongside newcomer Sri Divya. This film marked the first time Sivakarthikeyan sang a song in a film. His performance received positive reviews, with critics praising his believability and delivery. The film was his biggest commercial success at that time and ran in theaters for 100 days. His performances in 2013 earned him the Vijay Award for Entertainer of the Year, a moment he described as memorable.

In 2014, he starred in the comedy film “Maan Karate,” produced by A. R. Murugadoss, where he played a carefree urban youth pretending to be a boxer to impress a girl. In 2015, he teamed up again with Durai Senthilkumar for the police action film “Kaaki Sattai,” released on February 27. The story revolved around a sincere constable taking risks to combat black market organ donation, aspiring to become an Inspector. He reunited with director Ponram for “Rajini Murugan,” starring opposite newcomer Keerthy Suresh, although the film’s delayed release caused financial issues for the producer.

Sivakarthikeyan’s film “Remo,” directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan and produced by R. D. Raja, featured him as a youth disguising himself as a female nurse to befriend his love interest. He then starred in Mohan Raja’s action-thriller “Velaikkaran,” pairing with Nayanthara and featuring Fahadh Faasil as the antagonist. The film, focusing on an employee fighting against food adulteration, was released in 2017 to positive reviews. In 2018, he collaborated with director Ponram for the third time in “Seemaraja,” featuring an ensemble cast including Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Simran, Lal, and Soori.

The film received mixed reviews. Later that year, he acted in “Kanaa,” the directorial debut of Arunraja Kamaraj and the first film of Sivakarthikeyan’s production company. The film, where he played a cricket coach, was highly praised. In 2019, he starred in “Mr. Local,” opposite Nayanthara for the second time, but it received poor reviews. He also appeared in the family drama “Namma Veettu Pillai” and the superhero film “Hero.”

In 2021, Sivakarthikeyan starred in “Doctor,” which received highly positive reviews and became the highest-grossing film of his career at the time.
