Early Life

Shahid Kapoor was born in New Delhi on February 25, 1981, to actor Pankaj Kapur and actor-dancer Neelima Azeem. His parents separated when he was three, and his father moved to Mumbai, marrying actress Supriya Pathak. Meanwhile, Shahid stayed in Delhi with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather, who worked for the Russian magazine Sputnik, played a significant role in his early life.

Shahid’s father, a struggling actor at the time, could visit him only once a year. At the age of 10, his mother, who was working as a dancer, moved to Mumbai to pursue acting. In Mumbai, Azeem married actor Rajesh Khattar, and Shahid continued to live with them until their separation in 2001. Shahid still uses the last name Khattar on his passport. He has a half-brother, Ishaan, from his mother’s marriage to Khattar, and two paternal half-siblings, Sanah and Ruhaan, from his father’s marriage to Pathak.

Shahid attended Gyan Bharati School in Delhi, Rajhans Vidyalaya in Mumbai, and later, Mithibai College in Mumbai for three years. His interest in dance led him to join Shiamak Davar’s dance institute at the age of 15. As a student there, he appeared as a background dancer in films like Dil To Pagal Hai and Taal, where Davar was the choreographer. Shahid’s dancing skills were showcased in a stage show at the institute, performing to “Vogue” and “GoldenEye,” which marked his first taste of feeling like a star. Later, he became an instructor at the institute.

Shahid’s journey continued as he took on various roles, including being an assistant director to his father on the 1998 television series Mohandas B.A.L.L.B. He started his career with the romantic comedy “Ishq Vishk (2003)” with Amrita Rao and Amrita Prakash, and it was a success, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. After that, he did different kinds of films like “Fida (2004)” with Kareena Kapoor and Bobby Deol, and “Dil Mange More (2004)” with Soha Ali Khan and Ayesha Takia.

In 2006, he starred in the family drama “Vivah (2006)” with Amrita Rao, and it did well at the box office.
