Early Life

Shafali Verma embarked on her cricket journey at the young age of 8. In a remarkable turn of events, she once donned the disguise of her brother Sahil Verma to fill in for him in a boys’ cricket championship. Surpassing the boys, she not only proved her skills but also clinched the player of the tournament award.

During the initial three years of her cricket training, Shafali received guidance from her father, Sanjeev Verma. Her father, who harbored dreams of becoming a cricketer himself, took her to local grounds for practice. He would reward her with 5 rupees for every six she hit. Despite facing challenges in pursuing his own cricket dreams, Shafali’s father ensured she had opportunities and support.

Initially facing resistance from boys who were reluctant to play cricket with her, Shafali took matters into her own hands. She cut her hair and played matches disguised as a boy until her talent became too evident to ignore.

In 2013, at the tender age of 9, Shafali, accompanied by her father, attended Sachin Tendulkar’s last Ranji Trophy match. The experience left an indelible mark on her, inspiring a deep commitment to practice hard and aspire to play for the Indian cricket team. Despite her persistent efforts, she couldn’t meet Sachin outside the guest house where he was staying. Shafali Verma’s journey is marked by determination, overcoming challenges, and a profound inspiration drawn from cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar.

Career

Before stepping into international cricket, she played for Velocity in the Women’s T20 Challenge, where she scored 34 runs in 31 balls. In September 2019, she was selected for India’s Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) squad for the series against South Africa. Making her WT20I debut at just fifteen years old, she became the youngest player to represent India in a T20I match. In November 2019, she further etched her name in history by becoming the youngest half-centurion for India in international cricket against the West Indies. Scoring 158 runs in five matches, she was honored as the player of the series.

In January 2020, she earned a spot in India’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia and received a central contract from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Prior to the tournament, she was ranked as the top batter in women’s T20I cricket.

May 2021 saw her inclusion in India’s Test and Women’s One Day International (WODI) squads for the series against England. Making her Test debut in June 2021, she scored an impressive 96 runs in her first Test innings, earning her the player of the match title. Her WODI debut followed in late June 2021 against England. She was also part of Birmingham Phoenix in the inaugural season of The Hundred.

In the 2021 Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), playing for Sydney Sixers, she achieved her maiden fifty against Hobart Hurricanes. January 2022 brought another milestone as she was named in India’s team for the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. Later, in July 2022, she was selected for India’s cricket team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

During the Women’s Premier League Auction, she was acquired by Delhi Capitals for Rs 2 crore. In her first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, she showcased her talent as an opener, scoring an impressive 84 runs in just 45 balls.
