Career

In 1986, Shukla ventured into serious theatre, acting in plays like “A View From The Bridge,” “Look Back in Anger,” “Ghashiram Kotwal,” and “Hayvadan.” He joined the NSD Repertoire Company in 1991 and earned his first major break in 1992 when Shekhar Kapur offered him a role in “Bandit Queen.”

Shukla played Gopi in the 1994 Doordarshan crime drama “Tehkikaat” and later wrote and acted in Zee TV’s “9 Malabar Hill.” In the 1990s, he had a short role in Doordarshan’s TV serial “Mulla Nasiruddin” alongside Raghubir Yadav.

His breakthrough came in 1998 when he co-wrote the script for “Satya” and portrayed gangster Kallu Mama in the film. This earned him the Star Screen Award for Best Screenplay.

Shukla has since been involved in various films, showcasing his versatility. He appeared in movies like “Bandit Queen,” “Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin,” “Kareeb,” “Zakhm,” “Satya,” “Taal,” and “Arjun Pandit” during the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, he was seen in “Hey Ram,” “Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!,” “Mohabbatein,” and “Nayak: The Real Hero,” among others.

In 2003, he wrote the screenplay for “Calcutta Mail,” winning the Zee Cine Award for Best Screenplay. He also ventured into international cinema with “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2008, playing Constable Srinivas.
