Career

Sanjay Leela Bhansali began his career as an assistant director, working with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra on films like “Parinda” and “1942: A Love Story.” In 1996, he made his directorial debut with “Khamoshi: The Musical,” which although not a commercial success, received critical acclaim for its story. His second directorial venture, “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” became a massive hit and was even screened at the 1999 Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India.

Following this success, Bhansali’s third film, “Devdas” (2002), was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival and was India’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2005, he directed “Black,” which received a remarkable eleven Filmfare awards.

In 2006, Bhansali ventured into television as a judge on the dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 1,” alongside Shilpa Shetty and Farah Khan. Later, in 2011, he served as a judge on the music talent show “X Factor India,” alongside Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam.

In 2008, Bhansali directed the stage opera “Padmavati,” which premiered at prestigious venues like Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, where it received standing ovations and curtain calls. In 2010, he wrote, directed, produced, and composed the music for the film “Guzaarish.”

His film “Mary Kom” (2014) was screened at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, making it the first Hindi film to be featured on the festival’s opening night. In 2013, Bhansali produced the Hindi TV serial “Saraswatichandra,” which garnered positive reviews, although he eventually left the project after producing a few episodes.

“Bajirao Mastani” (2015) emerged as one of the highest-grossing Indian films and was also screened at the 2016 International Film Festival of India in the Indian Panorama section. In 2016, Bhansali made his debut as a producer in Marathi cinema with the film “Laal Ishq.”

Controversy

In 2013, controversy arose around Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela.” Certain religious groups objected to the original title “Ramleela,” stating that it misled viewers since the film didn’t depict the story of Lord Rama’s “Ramlila.” As a result, the Delhi High Court issued stay orders on the film’s release, citing potential offense to Hindu religious sentiments. To address these concerns, the title was changed to “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela,” and the film was eventually released in most parts of India, except in Uttar Pradesh, where the Allahabad High Court banned its screening.

In January 2017, during the filming of “Padmaavat” (initially named “Padmavati”), members of the Rajput caste organization Shri Rajput Karni Sena physically attacked Bhansali and the film’s crew. They alleged that the film portrayed inaccurate historical facts and attempted to damage the film sets. This incident was followed by another attack on the production set in Kolhapur in March 2017, where the assailants set fire to the set, resulting in the destruction of many costumes and pieces of jewelry.
