Early Achievements

Salil Ankola, born in 1968 to a Konkani-speaking family in Ankola, Karnataka, started his cricket journey early. Making his mark at 20, he debuted for Maharashtra in the 1988–89 season. In a game against Gujarat, he scored 43 runs and took an impressive six-wicket haul, including a hat-trick. Another notable performance followed against Baroda, where he claimed six wickets for 51 runs in an innings. His outstanding season, with 27 wickets at an average of 20.18, caught the selectors’ attention, leading to his selection for India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989–90.

First-Class Cricket

Ankola’s Test debut during the tour at Karachi saw him alongside cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis. Despite the match ending in a draw, Ankola took two wickets for 128 runs. Unfortunately, injuries kept him out of the remaining Tests.

In the ODI series that followed, Ankola debuted in the second match, taking two wickets for 26 runs. In a memorable moment, he arrived at number 10 and hit a six off the first ball he faced from Imran Khan, although India ended up losing. Despite being selected for Test squads, Ankola faced the unique cricketing fate known as “Ankolad” – being dropped without getting a chance to play.

Ankola continued in ODI cricket, working on his skills alongside other bowlers. In the early 1990s, he underwent training under Frank Tyson, focusing on refining his style rather than just pace. During this time, Ankola married Parineeta, and the couple has two children.

Return to International Cricket

After a three-year gap, Ankola was selected for the Charms Cup against England and Zimbabwe at home. In a match against South Africa during the 1993 Hero Cup, he achieved his career-best ODI bowling figures, taking three wickets for 33 runs.

In 1996, Ankola made it to the Indian team for the World Cup, playing one match against Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, he was dropped from subsequent tournaments, and despite being part of the squad that toured South Africa in 1996–97, he didn’t get a chance in any Test matches. Ankola’s final international appearance was in the Standard Bank International ODI tournament, where he played five games against South Africa and Zimbabwe. His last match, against South Africa, saw him conceding 50 runs in seven overs.

Retirement

Following the tour, Ankola announced his retirement from international cricket in 1997, marking the end of his cricketing journey on the global stage.

Post Retirement Contributions

In March 2010, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) granted Salil Ankola a benefit match in the form of a Twenty20 game held at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai. The match featured Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, and Ankola played alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was then the captain of the Indian national cricket team. The benefit match was described as a fortunate moment for Ankola, as not many players get the chance to have the current India captain participate in their benefit match.

In 2020, Salil Ankola took on the role of chief selector for the Mumbai Cricket Association. Expressing his desire to contribute back to the game, Ankola applied for the selection committee post and was appointed as the Chairman of Mumbai Senior & U25 Committee on December 16, 2020. When Ankola assumed the role, the Mumbai team was going through a period without winning any trophies for six years. His responsibility was to rebuild the team and restore Mumbai Cricket’s lost glory.

Under his chairmanship, Mumbai achieved significant successes. In the 2021/22 season, Mumbai won the Vijay Hazare Trophy after a prolonged gap. In the 2022/23 season, the senior team reached the finals of the Ranji Trophy and secured victory in the U25 CK Nayudu Trophy. Additionally, in the same season, the Mumbai senior team clinched the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Championship for the first time since its inception in 2006/07.

Ankola’s leadership has been credited with initiating a successful team rebuilding process, evident from the current Mumbai team’s average age of 25. The positive outcomes in terms of trophy victories highlight Ankola’s effective tenure as the Chairman of the Mumbai Selection Committee over the past three seasons. Overall, it is acknowledged that Salil Ankola has played a commendable role in revitalizing and steering the Mumbai cricket team to success.

Acting Career

After bidding farewell to cricket, Salil Ankola shifted his focus towards the world of cinema. His cinematic journey began with the 2000 Hindi film “Kurukshetra,” where he portrayed the role of a cop alongside Sanjay Dutt. Following this debut, he appeared in “Pitaah” (2002) and his last major release, “Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne” (2003), where he shared the screen with Esha Deol and Zayed Khan. In the subsequent year, he took on the character of a cricket captain in “Silence Please…The Dressing Room,” a film that did not perform well at the box office, yet Ankola’s performance earned appreciation.

Ankola also ventured into reality television, participating in the first season of Bigg Boss, the Indian version of the reality show Big Brother, in 2006. Prior to this, he appeared in the Indian soap opera “Karam Apna Apna” under a contractual agreement with Balaji Telefilms.

The period from 2008 to 2012 proved challenging for Ankola, as financial struggles and frustration led to a combination of alcoholism and strained marital relations. Despite a benefit match arranged by the BCCI in 2010 to alleviate financial pressures, it proved insufficient. His first marriage of 19 years ended in divorce in 2011.

Following this challenging phase, Ankola gradually recovered and resumed acting on television. In February 2013, he played the role of Savitri’s father in the daily show “Savitri,” but he was later replaced in August 2013. Rumors circulated about his potential appearance in an episode of the popular Zee TV show, “Fear Files.”

In 2015, Ankola and his wife participated in the reality show “Power Couple.” He then gained acclaim for his role in the super-hit show “Karamphaldata Shani” in 2016, which ran successfully for two years and was dubbed in multiple languages worldwide.

Following his television success, Ankola made a shift to South Indian films and, in 2020, made a surprising return to cricket as the Chairman of the Mumbai Senior U25 Selection Committee, marking a full circle in his diverse career.
