Career

Rituparna Sengupta began her acting career in 1989 with the Bengali fantasy TV series “Shwet Kapot,” where she starred opposite Kushal Chakraborty. The show, based on “The White Dove” Danish fairy tale, gained attention due to Chakraborty’s popularity.

In 1990, Sengupta appeared in the Bengali sitcom “Hortoner Golam” and the TV series “Kalpurush,” based on Samaresh Majumdar’s novel. Her film debut came in 1991 with the Odia film “Kotia Manish Gotiye Jaga,” where she played Radha opposite Bijay Mohanty. Despite initial objections from her father, the film was a success.

Sengupta’s breakthrough in Bengali cinema came with “Shwet Pathorer Thala” in 1992, where she replaced Gargi Roychowdhury in the role of Titli. She continued to feature in successful Bengali films throughout the 1990s. In 1994, she made her Bollywood debut in “Teesra Kaun” opposite Chunkey Pandey, but the film didn’t perform well commercially.

In 1995, she starred in successful Bengali films like “Sujan Sakhi” and “Sansar Sangram,” opposite Abhishek Chatterjee and Chiranjeet Chakraborty, respectively. She also appeared in the telefilm “Mohini.”

Throughout the late 1990s, Sengupta gained prominence in Bengali cinema, often starring opposite Prosenjit Chatterjee in commercially successful films. She also found success in Bangladeshi cinema with films like “Sagarika” and “Tomar Amar Prem.”

In 2000, she appeared in Aparna Sen’s “Paromitar Ek Din,” which earned her critical acclaim. Between 2008 and 2011, Sengupta starred in several films, but only a few were successful either commercially or critically.

Her resurgence came in 2012 with films like “Charulata 2011” and “Muktodhra.” However, she faced setbacks with films like “Om Shanti,” which performed poorly at the box office.

In 2015, she received critical acclaim for her role as Begum Jaan in “Rajkahini,” which was a box office success. In 2020, she starred in the thriller “The Parcel,” which received positive reviews from critics.
