In the late 1960s, businessman Kuljeet Pal spotted Rekha at Gemini Studios and cast her in his project “Anjana Safar.” She moved to Bombay in 1969 and started her career in the film industry. Rekha’s debut film was “Operation Jackpot Nalli C.I.D 999,” a Kannada film where she played a lead role. In “Anjana Safar,” she played Sunita, a woman searching for treasure in Africa. Despite a controversial kissing scene, the film faced censorship issues and was released years later as “Do Shikaari.”

Throughout the 1970s, Rekha worked in numerous films, but most were commercial failures. Despite her success in films like “Raampur Ka Lakshman” and “Kahani Kismat Ki,” she wasn’t recognized for her acting skills. Rekha faced criticism for her appearance but decided to transform herself, focusing on her acting, appearance, and choice of roles.

Her breakthrough came in 1976 with “Do Anjaane,” where she played Amitabh Bachchan’s wife. This marked the beginning of many successful collaborations with Bachchan. In 1977, she had commercial successes with films like “Khoon Pasina” and “Aap Ki Khatir,” earning praise for her performances.

The turning point in Rekha’s career came in 1978 with “Ghar,” where she portrayed a rape victim. This role earned her critical acclaim and her first nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards. The same year, “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” became a massive hit, establishing Rekha as one of the most successful actresses of the time.

In the early 1980s, Rekha starred in iconic films like “Khubsoorat” and “Umrao Jaan.” “Silsila,” where she starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan, created controversy due to their alleged off-screen affair. Despite the film’s failure, Rekha continued to deliver notable performances in films like “Vijeta” and “Utsav.”

The mid-1980s saw Rekha’s resurgence with films like “Khoon Bhari Maang,” where she played an avenging widow, earning her critical acclaim and awards. However, her success fluctuated in the 1990s, with some notable films like “Phool Bane Angaray” and “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love.”

In the 2000s, Rekha appeared in fewer films but delivered impactful performances in movies like “Lajja” and “Koi… Mil Gaya.” She received praise for her role as Sonia Mehra in the “Krrish” franchise.

In recent years, Rekha has taken on occasional roles, including a courtesan in “Yatra” and a grandmother in “Super Nani.” She received the Padma Shri award in 2010 for her contribution to Indian cinema.
