Career

Rakhi Sawant began her career in Bollywood with the movie “Agnichakra” in 1997, using the screen name Ruhi Sawant. She initially appeared in small roles and dance numbers in films like “Joru Ka Ghulam,” “Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke,” and “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai.” Her entry into item number songs came with “Bam Bhole Bam Bhole” from the movie “Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke.”

In 2003, Rakhi auditioned multiple times before landing her breakthrough item number “Mohabbat Hai Mirchi.” She also secured small roles in films such as “Masti” and “Main Hoon Na.” Expanding her horizons beyond Bollywood, Rakhi ventured into Marathi, Kannada, Odia, Tamil, and Telugu cinema.

In 2006, Rakhi Sawant entered the first season of the reality show “Bigg Boss” and made it to the top four finalists. During her stint on the show, she engaged in a heated conflict with fellow contestant Kashmeera Shah. She later participated in other reality shows like “Nach Baliye 3” and “Yeh Hai Jalwa.”

Rakhi also explored singing and released her album “Super Girl” in 2007. She appeared in several successful music videos, including “Pardesi” from the album “D J Hot Remix – Vol 3,” “Kajra Nite Remix,” and “Jhagda.”

In March 2014, Rakhi Sawant announced her intention to contest the Lok Sabha elections from a Mumbai seat and formed the political party Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP). However, her electoral bid received minimal support, with only 15 votes. Later that year, she resigned from RAP and joined the Republican Party of India led by Maharashtrian leader Ramdas Athawale.

Controversy

Rakhi Sawant has frequently found herself embroiled in controversies due to her dramatic antics and provocative statements. In 2005, she stirred up a major controversy when she was caught in a lip-lock with co-star Kainaaz Pervez at the premiere of “Khamoshh…Khauff Ki Raat.”

Another incident occurred when singer Mika Singh forcefully kissed her at his 35th birthday party, leading the actress to file a molestation case against him. Rakhi once again made headlines when she publicly slapped her ex-boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi while he attempted to reconcile with her after insulting her.

Tragically, a young man named Lakshman Prasad from Jhansi took his own life after being publicly humiliated on her show “Rakhi Ka Insaf,” where he was labeled as “impotent.” This led to an FIR being filed against Rakhi and four others.

In 2016, Rakhi faced backlash for making objectionable remarks against Valmiki on national television, offending the sentiments of the Valmiki community. She courted controversy once more in 2016 when she wore a dress featuring an objectionable image of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to Illinois, USA, to celebrate India’s 70th Independence Day.

During India’s #MeToo movement, Rakhi stirred up further controversy by leveling false allegations against Tanushree Dutta, whom she accused of being a drug addict and liar. When Tanushree accused Nana Patekar of sexual harassment, Rakhi dismissed her allegations as a publicity stunt and even claimed that Dutta had raped her multiple times. Tanushree subsequently sued Rakhi for defamation, prompting Rakhi to threaten a countersuit.

In October 2023, Tanushree filed a complaint against Rakhi Sawant at the Oshiwara Police Station in Mumbai for causing her mental trauma during the 2018 Me Too case. Later in August 2023, Rakhi’s best friend Rajshree More filed a police complaint against her, alleging defamation and threats. Rajshree claimed that Rakhi had threatened her on the day when Adil made his first media appearance after being released from jail.
