Career
Raj Kapoor, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, began his journey at the tender age of ten, appearing in the Hindi film “Inquilab” in 1935. His breakthrough came in 1947 with “Neel Kamal,” where he starred opposite Madhubala. At just twenty-four, he founded his own studio, R. K. Films, and debuted as a director with “Aag” in 1948, which featured Nargis, Kamini Kaushal, and Premnath.
The following year, he achieved further success with “Andaz” alongside Dilip Kumar and Nargis, followed by the blockbuster “Barsaat,” both in 1949. These hits solidified his position as a leading actor of the era.
In the early 1950s, Kapoor produced and starred in several acclaimed films under his banner, including “Awaara” (1951), “Shree 420” (1955), and “Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai” (1960), the latter winning the Filmfare Award for Best Film. These movies showcased his screen persona, inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s iconic Tramp character.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Kapoor continued to deliver hits such as “Sargam” (1950), “Chori Chori” (1956), and “Anari” (1959). He also ventured into social films, producing successes like “Boot Polish” (1954) and “Ab Dilli Door Nahin” (1957).
In 1964, Kapoor ventured into color filmmaking with “Sangam,” which marked his last major success as an actor. Subsequent films like “Around the World” (1967) and “Sapnon Ka Saudagar” (1968) faced commercial setbacks.
His ambitious project “Mera Naam Joker” (1970) faced financial difficulties upon release but gained cult status later on. Kapoor then launched his sons’ careers, with Rishi Kapoor debuting in “Bobby” (1973), a groundbreaking teen romance.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Kapoor shifted focus to films centered on female protagonists, such as “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” (1978) and “Prem Rog” (1982). He also took supporting roles in films like “Naukri” (1978) and “Abdullah” (1980).
His final major film appearances were in “Do Jasoos” (1975) and “Gopichand Jasoos” (1982), both comedies. Kapoor’s last acting role was a cameo in the British television film “Kim” (1984).
Before his passing in 1988, Kapoor was set to direct “Henna,” starring his son Rishi Kapoor and Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiar. The film was eventually directed by his son Randhir and released in 1991.
