Rahat’s musical journey began at the tender age of nine when he performed publicly for the first time at his grandfather’s death anniversary. His talent shone brightly, and by the age of fifteen, he became an integral part of his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s renowned qawwali group. In 1985, Rahat embarked on a tour of the United Kingdom with his uncle, showcasing his mesmerizing voice to international audiences.
As he grew older, Rahat didn’t confine himself to qawwali alone. He began performing solo songs at various concerts while still contributing to his family’s qawwali legacy. In 2003, Rahat marked his Bollywood playback singing debut with the movie “Paap,” lending his voice to the soul-stirring song “Mann Ki Lagan.”
His talent transcended borders, as evidenced by his collaborations with artists from around the world. Rahat worked alongside Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam for the soundtrack of the Hollywood film “Dead Man Walking” in 1995. He also collaborated with American composer James Horner on the soundtrack of “The Four Feathers” in 2002. Rahat’s versatility was further showcased when he featured on the soundtrack of Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” in 2006.
Rahat’s contributions extended beyond the realm of music into television. He served as a judge on several singing reality shows, including “Chhote Ustaad” and “Junoon.” In 2013, Rahat made history by becoming the first Pakistani to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, where he delivered captivating renditions of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s iconic qawwalis.
His journey with Coke Studio, Pakistan’s iconic musical platform, spanned multiple seasons, with memorable collaborations and solo performances. Rahat’s rendition of “Afreen Afreen” in season 9, alongside Momina Mustehsan, became a viral sensation, crossing 300 million views on YouTube.
Rahat’s musical prowess also graced international stages, as he appeared on MTV Unplugged (India) in 2016, showcasing his versatility to a global audience.
