Career
Purnendu Bhattacharya started his acting journey relatively late, making his Bollywood debut at the age of 46 in 2011 with the crime drama film “No One Killed Jessica,” where he portrayed the character of Nigam.
In 2014, he appeared in the Hindi drama film “Children of War,” also known as “The Bastard Child,” playing the role of Abbu, set against the backdrop of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide and the Bangladesh Liberation War. Continuing his film career, Bhattacharya was cast in the Hindi comedy “Fukrey Returns” in 2017, portraying the character of Brijmohan, the Delhi Chief Minister.
In 2019, he appeared in the Hindi action thriller “Romeo Akbar Walter,” playing the character of General Jahangir Alam, the Chief of Army Staff. The same year, he portrayed the character of Thapar in the Hindi drama film “Thappad.”
Moving to 2021, Bhattacharya appeared in the Hindi romantic comedy film “Meenakshi Sundareshwar,” playing the role of Mani. In 2023, he was cast in the Hindi heist thriller film “Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga,” portraying the character of a Pilot.
In addition to his film roles, Bhattacharya also ventured into web series. In 2018, he appeared in the Hindi coming-of-age romantic drama web series “Flames” as Mr. Bakshi, Rajat’s father. He followed this with roles in series like “M.O.M. – Mission Over Mars” in 2019, and “Sixer” and “Dr. Arora” in 2022.
Apart from his acting career, Bhattacharya is known for his fitness journey, having lost a significant amount of weight in 2008 and becoming a freelance health coach in 2010. He also engages in comedy skits for the YouTube fictional channel “Alright!” and shares his passion for fitness and his love for dogs on social media.
In recognition of his talent, Bhattacharya won the FOI Online Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble Cast for his role in the Hindi film “Thappad” in 2020.
