In 1980, Puneeth played Shyam in Dorai–Bhagavan’s “Vasantha Geetha,” and in 1981, he appeared as Lord Krishna in K. S. L. Swamy’s “Bhoomige Banda Bhagavantha.” The following year, he starred in B. S. Ranga’s “Bhagyavantha” and recorded his first popular song, “Baana Daariyalli Soorya.”
In 1982, Puneeth featured in two hit films, “Chalisuva Modagalu” and “Hosa Belaku,” alongside his father. He won his first Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor for his role in “Chalisuva Modagalu.” The following year, he starred in two mythological films, “Bhakta Prahlada” and “Eradu Nakshatragalu,” winning his second Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor for the latter.
Puneeth’s breakthrough as a child actor came in 1985 with “Bettada Hoovu,” where he portrayed the innocent Ramu. His performance earned him the Best Child Artist award at the 33rd National Film Awards. He continued to act in films during his early teens, including “Shiva Mecchida Kannappa” in 1988 and “Parashuram” in 1989.
In 1994, Puneeth started working as a manager in his family’s production house. His first film as a manager was “Geluvina Saradara” in 1996. In April 2002, Puneeth made his debut as a leading man in “Appu,” opposite Rakshita. Directed by Puri Jagannadh and produced by Parvathamma Rajkumar, the film was a box office success. Puneeth’s dancing skills were praised, and he also sang a song in the film.
He continued to star in successful films like “Abhi” (2003), “Veera Kannadiga” (2004), and “Maurya” (2004), which enhanced his reputation as an actor.
In 2007, Puneeth starred in “Arasu” and “Milana,” receiving critical acclaim for his performances. He won his first Filmfare Best Actor award for “Arasu” and his first Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for “Milana.”

In 2017, Puneeth starred in “Raajakumara,” which became the highest-grossing Kannada-language film of all time at the box office.
His last film in a leading role, “James,” was released posthumously on what would have been Puneeth’s 47th birthday in 2022. It broke records for the biggest opening day collection and became the fastest Kannada movie to gross 100 crores.
