When Payal was just 17, she accompanied her friend to an audition for the BBC Telefilm “Sharpe’s Peril” and unexpectedly landed a role. In this period drama centered around English soldier Richard Sharpe, Payal portrayed the character of a village girl, the daughter of a revolutionary freedom fighter from Bengal. This marked her initial foray into the world of acting.

Shortly after, she starred in a Canadian film where she played the role of a school girl who falls in love with her neighbor’s servant. Despite her parents’ disapproval of her career choice in the film industry, Payal took a bold step during her college holidays by running away from her home in Calcutta to Mumbai. In Mumbai, she enrolled in Namit Kishore’s acting academy, where she crossed paths with Chandra Sekhar Yeleti. He offered her the lead role in his film “Prayanam,” opposite Manchu Manoj, which she gladly accepted.

Following her debut in Telugu cinema with “Prayanam,” Payal continued to shine in the South Indian film industry, appearing in movies such as “Mr. Rascal” and “Oosaravelli” in Telugu and “Varshadhare” in Kannada. Expanding her horizons, Payal ventured into Tamil cinema with her role in “Therodum Veedhiyile,” directed by Saro Sriram. In this film, she portrayed a traditional girl living in Erode.

Her journey in Bollywood commenced when she was selected as the female lead by Vivek Agnihotri for his film “Freedom.” Despite facing challenges, Payal signed another Hindi comedy film, “Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi,” directed by Sanjay Chhel, which released worldwide in September 2017. However, in April 2020, Payal found herself in dire straits, out of work and facing financial difficulties, a situation she never anticipated.

The situation took a dramatic turn when, on September 23, 2020, Payal accused Anurag Kashyap of sexually harassing her in 2013, filing a police complaint against him. Kashyap vehemently denied the allegations, attributing them to an effort to silence his criticism of the government. Mumbai police subsequently questioned Kashyap, who provided evidence demonstrating he was in Sri Lanka at the time of the alleged incident.

Following these events, actor Richa Chadha filed a defamation suit against Payal in the Bombay High Court for attempting to drag her name into the allegations against Kashyap. Ultimately, Payal issued an unconditional apology to Richa Chadha, leading to the settlement of the case in the Bombay High Court.
