Career

In 2003, Pankaj Tripathi began his acting career with an uncredited role in the Kannada-language drama Chigurida Kanasu. The following year, he moved to Mumbai and made his first appearance in Hindi cinema with an uncredited role in the romantic action film Run. Initially, Tripathi predominantly portrayed antagonistic characters, gaining recognition for his portrayal of gangster roles.

Over the years, Tripathi appeared in various Hindi films in minor roles, including Bunty Aur Babli, Apaharan, Omkara, Shaurya, and others. He also ventured into television, featuring in series like Bahubali, Powder, Zindagi Ka Har Rang…Gulaal, and Sarojini – Ek Nayi Pehal.

In 2012, Tripathi landed his breakthrough role as Sultan in the crime drama duology Gangs of Wasseypur. Despite this breakthrough, he continued to star in minor roles in films such as Dabangg 2, Gunday, Singham Returns, and Dilwale.

Tripathi’s critical and commercial recognition surged from 2017 onwards. His first lead role was in the neo-noir thriller Gurgaon, followed by pivotal roles in films like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Fukrey Returns, and the acclaimed black comedy-drama Newton, which earned him a National Film Award.

In 2018, he garnered high acclaim for his role in the horror comedy Stree and made his Tamil cinema debut with Kaala. Additionally, he portrayed the mafia don Kaleen Bhaiya in the web series Mirzapur, which brought him widespread acclaim.

The following year, Tripathi delivered critically acclaimed performances in supporting roles in films like Luka Chuppi, The Tashkent Files, and Super 30. He also starred in the web series Sacred Games and Criminal Justice.

In 2020, Tripathi appeared in his first Hollywood film, Extraction, and received dual nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl and Ludo.

In 2021, he received dual nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Mimi and 83, winning the award for Mimi. His role in Mimi also earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2023, Tripathi starred in the satirical comedy-drama OMG 2 and the comedy Fukrey 3. He is set to portray former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the biographical drama Main Atal Hoon, scheduled for release in 2024.
