Career

At a young age, Joshi began performing on stage and later ventured into acting in films. She appeared in movies like “Badla” (1976), “Aadmi Sadak Ka” (1977), and “Dada” (1979), where she portrayed a blind child who influences a notorious gangster. In the 1980s and early 1990s, she featured in art films such as “Rukmavati Ki Haveli” (1991), “Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda” (1992), and “Trishagni” (1988), along with commercial big-budget films like “Saudagar,” “Panaah,” and “Tehelka.”

Her role as a disabled girl in “Andha Yudh” (1988) earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, while she won the National Film Award for “Woh Chokri” (1992). Additionally, she portrayed Kasturba Gandhi in Shyam Benegal’s “The Making of the Mahatma” (1995).

Joshi also made significant contributions to regional cinema, starring in the Malayalam film “Ilayum Mullum” (1994) and the Kannada film “Bhujangayyana Dashavathara” (1991). She also appeared in the Marathi film “Rita,” directed by Renuka Shahane.

In recent years, Joshi co-produced and acted in her husband Vivek Agnihotri’s directorial ventures, “The Tashkent Files” (2019) and “The Kashmir Files” (2022), earning two National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She declined a nomination as a member of the Film and Television Institute of India society due to students’ protests.

On television, Joshi gained recognition as the co-anchor of the popular music show “Zee Antakshari” and as the host of “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Marathi L’il Champs” on Zee Marathi. She also appeared in various TV shows such as “Rishtey,” “Mr. Yogi,” “Bharat Ek Khoj,” and “Aarohan,” among others.
