Career

As a child, Padmini Kolhapure sang in the chorus for songs in films such as “Yaadon Ki Baaraat,” “Kitaab,” and “Dushman Dost” alongside her sister Shivangi. Later, she sang for her own films like “Vidhaata,” “Daana Pani,” “Professor Ki Padosan,” “Hum Intezaar Karenge,” and “Sadak Chhap” with Kishore Kumar. She released an album titled “Music Lovers” with Bappi Lahiri and performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Bappi Lahiri and his troupe in 1986.

Asha Bhosle recommended Padmini’s name to Dev Anand, who cast her in “Ishk Ishk Ishk” (1975). This led to roles in other films such as “Dreamgirl” (1977), “Zindagi” (1976), and “Saajan Bina Suhagan” (1978). She received praise for her performance as a schoolgirl affected by black magic in “Gehrayee” (1980).

Padmini’s mother left her job to support her daughter’s burgeoning career. Padmini’s most famous child role was in Raj Kapoor’s 1977 film “Satyam Shivam Sundaram.” Her success continued with her controversial role in “Insaaf Ka Tarazu” (1980), where she played a rape victim, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

At 15, Padmini graduated to heroine roles in Nasir Hussain’s “Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai” opposite Rishi Kapoor. Although the film did not succeed, she later reunited with Rishi Kapoor for Raj Kapoor’s blockbuster “Prem Rog” (1982), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She also received a Filmfare Special Performance Award for “Ahista Ahista” (1981).

Known for her professionalism, Padmini worked even when she was unwell, such as during the filming of “Do Dilon Ki Dastaan” (1985). She achieved more box office success with films like “Vidhaata” (1982) and “Souten” (1983). Her performance in “Pyar Jhukta Nahin” (1985) with Mithun Chakraborty garnered a Filmfare Best Actress nomination.

Padmini agreed to work with newcomer Anil Kapoor in his debut film “Woh Saat Din” (1983), which was a hit and helped launch his career. Other notable films from the 80s include “Yeh Ishq Nahin Aasaan” (1984), “Swarag Se Sunder” (1986), “Suhaagan” (1986), and “Dadagiri” (1987).

In the 90s, Padmini limited her work, with notable films including “Professor Ki Padosan” (1994) and the film “Rockford,” where she served as producer. In 2000, she won the Screen Award for Best Actress – Marathi for “Chimani Pakhar.”

Padmini returned to acting in 2004, working in Marathi and Hindi films like “Manthan: Ek Amrut Pyala” (2005) and “Eight Shani” (2006). She appeared in “Mera Bachpan” with Helen in 2008 and on stage in plays such as “Kaash,” “Abhi To Mein Jawan Hoon,” and “Aasman Se Gire Khajoor Pe Atke” with Shakti Kapoor.

After 2010, she mostly played supporting roles, often portraying a mother. In 2011, she entered Malayalam cinema with V. K. Prakash’s “Karmayogi,” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” In 2013, she played Shahid Kapoor’s mother in “Phata Poster Nikla Hero” and portrayed Gopikabai in “Panipat” (2019).
