Career

Nikhita, born into a mixed Bengali and Punjabi family in Kolkata, attended the prestigious La Martiniere for Girls for her schooling. In 2010, she moved to Chennai to pursue a degree in dentistry.

Her journey in the music industry began at A. R. Rahman’s K. M. College of Music and Technology, where she participated in an Indo-German exchange program. Rahman then individually auditioned her for a commercial project titled ‘Qyuki’ with Shekhar Kapur.

In 2012, Nikhita released her Bengali album titled “Kotha,” featuring re-arranged Nazrul Geeti, songs written by renowned poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Her breakthrough came in 2015 when she performed the song “Ladio” from Shankar’s film “I,” composed by A. R. Rahman. She received critical acclaim for her work and subsequently recorded the Telugu and Hindi versions of the song. Nikhita continued to work on projects like “O Kadhal Kanmani” and “Thanga Magan” in the same year.

Apart from singing in movies, Nikhita formed a band and performed at various venues in Kerala and Kolkata. Her band, Gandhi, consists of talented musicians. Nikhita’s accolades include winning the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the title track of “Raabta.” She was also nominated for the Filmfare Awards for her songs “Ghar” from “Jab Harry Met Sejal” and “Tomra Ekhono Ki” from “Meghnad Badh Rahasya.”

In November 2018, she gained further popularity with her playback for the song “Qaafirana” from the film “Kedarnath.” The song became a hit, earning her the Nestle Kitkat Sony Mix Audience Music Award for the best duet along with Arijit Singh.

In April 2019, Nikhita released her single “Ek Do Teen” followed by “Madari” from the film “The Extraordinary Journey of The Fakir” in June 2019. She continued her streak with “Main Deewana Tera” from “Arjun Patiala.” In 2024, Nikhita participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa as a wildcard entrant.
