Early Life

Neeti Mohan was born in Delhi to Brij Mohan Sharma, a government officer, and Kusum, a homemaker. She is the oldest of four sisters: Shakti Mohan, Mukti Mohan, and Kriti Mohan. Neeti began her musical journey at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, learning singing alongside her involvement in dramatics and dancing, considering singing as a serious hobby.

During her school days, Neeti was part of the school band and participated in the Delhi Republic Day parade for five consecutive years. Encouraged by her father, she engaged in various extracurricular activities like singing, dancing, and theater. Neeti was acknowledged as the best cadet in the National Cadet Corps of India and represented the country in the Youth Exchange Programme.

Later, she pursued formal music education at the Bhatkhande Music Institute and continued her training in Mumbai under Rajashree Pathak for five years. Neeti also studied dancing with her sisters, training in Bharata Natyam and Kathak under Ashley Lobo. Besides learning dance, she worked as an instructor, imparting her knowledge to kids. Neeti graduated in philosophy from Miranda House, University of Delhi.

In 2003, Neeti won Channel V’s reality TV show Popstars and became part of the pop group Aasma. This opportunity led her to perform with Bryan Adams. She was suggested by Deepak Gattani, A. R. Rahman’s concert tours manager, to Imtiaz Ali for a supporting role in the film Socha Na Tha (2005). In 2009, Neeti joined the Star Plus show Music Ka Maha Muqqabla and was part of the winning team “Shankar’s Rockstars.”

Neeti Mohan married actor Nihaar Pandya on 15 February 2019, and they announced their first pregnancy on their second wedding anniversary in 2021. In an interview, Neeti shared her journey of how A. R. Rahman discovered her. Her sister Shakti was performing as a dancer at a Rahman show in 2006, and after expressing her desire to perform with Rahman, Neeti got the chance six months later. Through a series of fortunate events, including a chance meeting with Rahman’s manager, Neeti auditioned and was selected for Rahman’s US tour in 2007.

Career

Neeti Mohan made her entry into Bollywood with the song “Ishq Wala Love” from Student of the Year (2012), composed by Vishal–Shekhar. Following this, she lent her voice to the peppy track “Jiya Re” from Jab Tak Hai Jaan, composed by A. R. Rahman. Mohan received acclaim for her refreshing voice and energetic rendition. Both these songs were declared chartbusters, and she won the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent.

In 2013, Mohan continued her success with various projects. She collaborated with Ayushmann Khurrana for the Punjabi track “Saadi Galli Aaja” and sang “Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari” for the film Chennai Express. She also worked with Vishal–Shekhar for Gippi and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, recording “Dil Kaagzi” and “Naina” respectively. Additionally, she provided the chorus for Raghav Sachar’s “Bittoo Sab Ki Lega” from Bittoo Boss and released her first single, “Ja Ja,” composed and written by herself.

Throughout 2014, Neeti Mohan continued to showcase her versatility. Her song “Tune Maari Entriyaan” in Gunday, sung alongside Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Dadlani, and KK, became a critical and commercial success. She also collaborated with Ankit Tiwari for “Aalif Se” in Mr. X and worked on multiple projects with Himesh Reshammiya. Notable songs include “Tu Hi Tu” from Kick, which received critical acclaim, and “Darbadar” from CityLights. Mohan also contributed to Bang Bang! and Happy New Year, both of which were commercially successful.

In 2015, Neeti Mohan’s significant release was the Amit Trivedi-composed Bombay Velvet, where she performed six jazzy tracks.
