Naseeruddin Shah, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, began his acting career with a small role in the 1967 film “Aman.” His breakthrough in mainstream Bollywood came with the 1980 film “Hum Paanch.”
Throughout the 1980s, Shah appeared in several notable films, including “Masoom” in 1983 and “Karma” in 1986, where he acted alongside Dilip Kumar. He also starred in films like “Ijaazat” in 1987 and “Jalwa” in 1988.
In 1988, Shah played Inspector Ghote in the Merchant Ivory English language film “The Perfect Murder,” opposite his wife Ratna Pathak. He continued to act in multi-star Bollywood films like “Ghulami” in 1985 and “Vishwatma” in 1992.
By 1994, Shah had acted in over 100 films, including his villainous role in “Mohra.” He also ventured into Malayalam cinema with “Ponthan Mada.” Shah’s versatility led him to portray various characters, from a ghazal singer-cum-terrorist mastermind in “Sarfarosh” in 1999 to Mahatma Gandhi in “Hey Ram” in 2000. He gained international recognition with roles in films like “Monsoon Wedding” in 2001 and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” in 2003, where he played Captain Nemo.
Shah made his directorial debut with “Yun Hota To Kya Hota” in 2006, starring established actors like Konkona Sen Sharma and Irrfan Khan. In addition to his film career, Shah co-founded the theatre group Motley Productions in 1977 and directed plays by renowned writers like Lavender Kumar and Ismat Chughtai.
He also appeared in television series like “Mirza Ghalib” in 1988 and “Bharat Ek Khoj” in 1989, showcasing his versatility across different mediums. Throughout the years, Shah remained active in various media and art forms, including hosting science magazine programs and narrating audiobooks for kids.
