Career
In 1981, Mukesh Ambani left Stanford University to join his family’s business, Reliance Industries Limited, at the behest of his father, Dhirubhai Ambani. At just 24 years old, he took charge of building the Patalganga petrochemical plant, a pivotal project as the company expanded into oil refinery and petrochemicals.
Under Ambani’s leadership, Reliance Industries set up the world’s largest petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, India, by integrating petrochemicals, power generation, port facilities, and related infrastructure. This refinery had the capacity to produce 660,000 barrels per day by 2010.
In December 2013, Ambani discussed the possibility of collaborating with Bharti Airtel to establish digital infrastructure for a 4G network in India. He also announced plans to invest Rs 1.8 trillion across various businesses over the next three years and launch 4G broadband services in 2015. However, in February 2014, Ambani faced legal issues when a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against him for alleged irregularities in the pricing of natural gas from the KG basin.
In 2016, Ambani was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions to engineering and business leadership in oil refineries, petrochemical products, and related industries. Acknowledged for his philanthropy, Ambani ranked fifth among India’s philanthropists in 2015, according to China’s Hurun Research Institute. He also became a Director of Bank of America, marking the first time a non-American held this position.
By 2016, Ambani had become the 36th richest person globally, consistently topping Forbes’ list of India’s richest individuals for the past decade. He was also the only Indian businessman listed among Forbes’ most powerful people. As of October 2020, Forbes ranked Ambani as the 6th wealthiest person worldwide. In July 2018, he surpassed Jack Ma to become Asia’s richest person. Additionally, Ambani owns the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians and founded the Indian Super League.
