Early Life

Malaika Arora, named after the Swahili word “malaika” meaning “angel,” was born in Thane, Maharashtra. Her parents, Joyce Polycarp and Anil Arora, divorced when she was 11 years old. Following the separation, she moved with her mother and sister Amrita to Chembur.

In her early years, Malaika completed her secondary education at Swami Vivekanand School in Chembur. She also attended Holy Cross High School in Thane until the ninth grade. Later, she pursued her college education at Jai Hind College, Churchgate, but couldn’t finish it due to her growing commitments in the professional realm.

Before embarking on her modeling career, Malaika lived in Borla Society, Chembur, across from Basant Talkies. Her journey into the world of modeling marked a significant shift in her life, redirecting her path.

It’s worth noting that her father, Anil Arora, hailed from Fazilka, a town on the Indian border, and worked in the Indian Merchant Navy. Meanwhile, her mother, Joyce Polycarp, is a Malayali Christian. The diverse cultural background of her parents shaped Malaika’s upbringing.

Career

Malaika Arora began her career as a VJ for MTV India when it first started its operations. She took on roles such as an interviewer and hosted shows like Club MTV. Later, she co-hosted Love Line and Style Check with Cyrus Broacha.

In the late ’90s, Malaika transitioned into the modeling world, featuring in various advertisements. She also appeared in album songs like “Gur Naalo Ishq Mitha” and became widely known for her iconic item number “Chaiyya Chaiyya” in the 1998 Bollywood film Dil Se.

Her career took a new turn in 2010 when she featured in the popular item song “Munni Badnaam Hui” in the film Dabangg, produced by her then-husband Arbaaz Khan. The song’s success led her to set a world record in 2011, leading a choreographed dance with 1235 participants.

Over the years, Malaika diversified her career, becoming a celebrity endorser for Taiwan Excellence in 2012 and endorsing Dabur’s 30-Plus. She performed live in concerts alongside artists like Atif Aslam, Shaan, and Bipasha Basu.

In 2014, she confirmed a cameo appearance in the Farah Khan-directed film Happy New Year. Malaika also ventured into television, serving as a judge on shows like Nach Baliye, Zara Nachke Dikha, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, India’s Got Talent, MTV Supermodel of the Year in 2019, and India’s Best Dancer in 2020.
