Career

After completing his studies, he and a group of college friends formed a theater group named “Abhiyaan”. Later, he joined the Delhi-based theater company “Yatrik”, founded by director Joy Michael in 1964. He was Yatrik’s first paid artist. However, Yatrik collapsed due to the director’s absence while lecturing in US universities. In 1972, he moved to Kolkata and began working with the theater group “Padatik”, which focused on Hindi theater under director Shyamanand Jalan.

His breakthrough in films came with Shyam Benegal’s “Nishaant” in 1974, leading to collaborations in several more films like “Manthan” (1976), “Bhumika: The Role” (1977), “Junoon” (1978), and “Kalyug” (1980). He gained recognition in mainstream cinema playing the bald villain Shakaal in Ramesh Sippy’s “Shaan” (1980), which marked his transition from parallel to mainstream cinema. His roles in films like “Shakti” (1982), “Ghayal” (1990), and “Border” (1997) further solidified his position in the industry.

While continuing his presence in commercial cinema, he also appeared in art films such as “Chakra” (1981), “Arth” (1982), “Andhi Gali” (1984), and “Monsoon Wedding” (2001). He ventured into Punjabi cinema, starring in films like “Chan Pardesi” (1980) and “Mahaul Theek Hai” (1999).

He collaborated with director Deepa Mehta in six movies, including her trilogy films “Earth”, “Fire”, and “Water”. He also appeared in TV serials like “Shanno Ki Shaadi” and “Mahi Ve”. Throughout his career, he maintained a presence on stage with plays like “Teen Farishtay”, “Hatya ek akaar ki”, and “Atmakatha”.

In terms of filmography, he has had a diverse range of roles spanning across various genres and languages. He appeared in period films like “Jodha Akbar” and “Lagaan”, and also acted in international projects including a German film in 2009.
