Career

When Karthi returned to Chennai, he met director Mani Ratnam and worked as an assistant director in “Aayutha Ezhuthu” because he aspired to become a film director. He briefly appeared as an extra in the film but continued to receive acting offers. His father convinced him to pursue acting instead of directing, citing the fleeting nature of acting opportunities as one ages.

In April 2005, Karthi accepted his first acting assignment, starring alongside Priyamani in a film. His breakthrough came when director Ameer offered him the titular role in “Paruthiveeran.” Despite facing financial challenges during production, the film released in January 2007 to critical acclaim and commercial success. Karthi’s portrayal of a village ruffian garnered widespread praise from critics and audiences alike.

Following the success of “Paruthiveeran,” Karthi signed his second project under Selvaraghavan’s direction, initially titled “Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam.” However, the project was later abandoned, and Karthi began filming for Selvaraghavan’s action-adventure film “Aayirathil Oruvan,” which faced delays in production. In the midst of these projects, he agreed to star in Linguswamy’s “Paiyaa,” marking his first urban character role.

In early 2010, “Aayirathil Oruvan” was released, showcasing Karthi as a chief coolie. The film received positive reviews, marking a successful comeback for Karthi. The same year, “Paiyaa” hit the screens, becoming a commercial success and earning Karthi further acclaim.

Karthi continued his success streak with Suseenthiran’s “Naan Mahaan Alla” in 2010, where he played a middle-class youth caught up in a gang conflict. The film received praise for Karthi’s performance and became popular among audiences.

In 2011, Karthi starred in the action-masala film “Siruthai,” a remake of a Telugu film, where he played dual roles as a thief and a police officer. Despite mixed critical reception, the film was a commercial success, establishing Karthi as a prominent actor in the Tamil film industry.

His subsequent films, such as “Saguni” (2012) and “Alex Pandian” (2013), received mixed to negative reviews. However, films like “Biriyani” (2013) and “Madras” (2014) brought him back into the limelight with their critical and commercial success.
